Bernd,

I am the "one Robert Prins" who entered the GBoR in 1991 and was thrown out a year later. I never set out to break any records, although the 1991 record broke my old record in Ken Welsh' "Hitch-hikers Guide to Europe".

I'm the first to admit that I was just very lucky to be picked up by Neoklis Adamopoulos, a Greek bar owner living in Germany, driving from Evzoni at the Greek/Yugoslavian border to just south of Cologne. However, the three subsequent rides that gave me my "15 minutes of fame" ((C) Andy Warhol) were indeed done on purpose, as Guinness didn't accept my 1986 record.

Robert, finally I make it onto the web again to express my joy at hearing from you in this forum. Cynical as I am of world records, I'm still glad to be in the company of record-holders, the personalities so to speak of the world of hitching celebrities :-).

I'm glad you cited some details of your hitch too. Guinness don't alas, and it's not easy to get out of them. You did mighty well to hitch that far so fast by any measure and I'm impressed.

Just recently I hitched from Adelaide to Coober Pedy in a day. While it's only 800 km or so, it's a stretch of road with a bad reputation. The road signs on the way have some fairly sad graffiti scratched into them by hitchers that wwasted into meagre skeletons waiting for a ride :-).

I too was lucky to score a reliable and long ride (Port Wakefield to Pimba) and immediately after a most adventurous ride to Coober Pedy, crashing in creek bed later that night with my new friends. It snowed a few days earlier in central australia and I can believe it. We froze our little butts off ... had to sleep on the embers of the fire (buried in sand) to keep from freezing. An experience I'll tell you ... But I made it in one day, something I kind of wanted tio prove was possible to some doubting friends. I even had a ride to Alice Springs the next day if I'd wanted it, (as far again) but I doubled back to trace down Pete the Czech, who's hitched around the world and written a couple of books on it ... an old guy I heard of on the way up the day before, and must see character. We had a ball together in the tiny opal town of Andamooka and they all conspired to get get me very drunk, which didn't give my immune system the boost it needed to cope with the night before ...

Anyhow, just a small taste of adventure. We're in the middle of Chapter 4 of my book of anecdotes ...

Chapter 5 will be Egypt, next month, we'll see how hitching the nile and back goes ...

I'd love to see some more messages on the discussion list by the way, if anyone's out there. Give me that warm feeling someone reading as I thumb around the place ... Always grateful for signs of life.

I'm drumming up some business en-route. Lots of drivers are on the web now, and keen to drop in some time. Not every day you pick up the Suite's roving hitching editor ...

We agree that records are silly, just have a look at , to see some of the silliest ones.

However, it's another good hitch-hiking site!

Hitch hiking claims........

For anyone else coming into this thread, I have salvaged the link, visited the page and book-marked it for the hitch-hiking splash page that I am going to create at Maguns Compass for Bernd.......

Yes Bernd, I did get your emails (and replied to them -- see the travel discussion that you started), and will be working on your suggestions. I hope to catch up with the roving Hitch Hiking Editor on Monday in Geneva ;-).

» Prino - Hitch-hiking records

Seems that we will have to rely on Vladas' site for records, the latest edition of the GBoR is sadly moving away from substance in the direction of style, and hitch-hiking is apparently no longer of interest...

» The_Thumb - Oh no!

I guess you're saying Robert, that you have seen the latest GoBR and they no longer have any hitching records at all!

That's news. Not too untoward, wouldn't surprise me if my cynical letters regarding past records and proposal to include the most prolofic Hitch-hikee as well or in place played some small tole in that.

Personally I could see it coming. The only record they were still running if I recall right was Stephan Schlei's and while I've yet to find Stephan and discuss it, I think the dispute between his status and Alexey Vorovs isn't one that's going to find any real resolution.

ALl in the realm of boasts, claims and diary records I think. Unless they're all keeping records like you have Robert! Which would be awesome ... what a source of stats!
