Hi Lisa,

This is heart wrenching. But I agree with you, it must be told. Most people don't know about number and scope of massacres that took place. Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee are the only two of those you wrote about that I knew about.

I'm glad you included the poignant words of Black Elk.

Tina

Yes, Tina is is so sad, but very necessary to tell. I'm glad you enjoyed the article, I hope everyone learned from these massacres and I hope that something like that never happens again.

Is it not so that every ethnic group in world history has committed such offenses? Weren't various aboriginal groups in North America expansionist? Did they not "disposess" various other tribes of their land and possessions? Is the crime more horrific if it is committed by a white against a non-white? All such massacres are horrible. However, I do not believe that any ethnic group is more noble than any other ethnic group. What of the Mayans who sacrificed human beings every day? Is that not "wrenching"?

It is a very sad fact that probably every ethnic group in history has committed massacres throughout time. It truly is awful.

No ethnic group is more noble, and the crime is certainly not more horrific if it is committed by a non-white. For the purpose of this particular topic, however, I tried to see things "through Indian eyes."

These are not simply "massacres" but comprise a massive genocide that is racist especially in the way we retell the stories. In school, we barely ever learn of these massacres. We never learn of the Kmher Rouge of Cambodia and the killing fields, and the fact that 1/3 of the population was exterminated there; yet "the Holocaust," referring to the holocaust of the persecution of Jews by the Nazis, is a topic every single year. Perhaps this is because we seem to value white life more? And even the genocide of Native Americans is just a smaller part of the puzzle. White people decided to colonize the whole world including North America, South America, Vast lands of Africa, India, Australia, China, Southeast Asia...notice a trend here? Who's the dominator and who's the dominated? White:people of color. I'm sorry, but world domination cannot compare to Mayans sacrificing human beings every day. I do not argue that these different crimes are more horrific than others, but what I do argue is that racism not only played a part in the domination of the 'other,' but also plays a part today in keeping these stories untold in favor for massacres of white people, valuing white life over other life.

How very right you are. It seems that history classes all over the country seem to focus on the white man's version of history without looking into the view of other races. It's so hard not to be judgmental of people when you only get one side of the story.

My reason for writing on this particular topic is because so many times we see just the white point of view. I felt telling it from the view of the Native Americans might help with discovering the complete truth.

No one will ever really know what happened in these cases, as everyone involved is now gone from this earth. Wouldn't it be great if we all learned from the past and genocide and hate crimes ceased for ever?
