I would like to thank Jimm B. GoodTracks, who has pointed out some errors in my first article, "The Otoe—An Introduction"

Here, in Mr. GoodTracks own words, are the errors he found:

"For example 'Shaumonekusse' [Shun ManiKathi: Prarie Wolf] was NOT a 'half-chief' as there were no such category of chiefs. Nor did the Otoes 'form from the Sioux.' You are correct to say that the Otoe-Missouria & Ioway did indeed originate from the Winnebago (Hochank), and in the traditional times, they referred to their 'itugan=grandfathers.' The seduction story of young love between children of prominent families who did not follow protocol expected for dating & mating/marriage between such families. The dispute was actually between the families, and the community sided with one family or the other. Thus, the community divided and became the Wadodana "Otoe People" and the Nyt^achi "Missouri People," whose region was primarily what is now the upper Northern Third of Missouri State and extending the width of the current state from present Kansas City to St. Louis."

"The Ioway, Otoe & Missouria did have a number of societies, however, your reference to the "Che or Aluqa" are actually family clans. There was said by the early reservation days elders that there were originally 'Seven Clans, Seven Sacred Pipes, connected to the Seven Stars.' The political and ceremonial functions of the tribe were lead by the Tunap^i (Black Bear Clan) in the Autumn & Winter. In the Spring & Summer, the Che Kiraje/Aruhwa (Buffalo Clan) head these functions, thus effecting a genuine balance of leadership, and control."

Thank you again, Mr. GoodTracks!!
