Shodan or Chodan or 1st. Dan or 1st. Degree Black Belt is the goal of every martial artist as they begin their journey down the path. Once they reach this exalted rank they soon learn that this not the apogee of their journey but rather the very beginning of the next journey.

It is to be likened to graduating from High school & beginning your university studies. Once you reach 4th. Dan (Master's Level) that is like starting graduate school. As Grand Master Jae Chul Shin, GM World TanSoooo Do Association, describes it, "Dan rank means nothing more than enough expertise to learn more."

It is with humility that Dan ranks learn more, teach what they know already & continue their life-long journeys down the paths of martial arts knowledge.

Exactly, Doc! Reaching the level of Shodan is sort of the place you finally figure out how much you DON'T know! You've finally reached the place where you can start asking good questions.
