This is a great article. Though I have researched Black history in Canada, I had never heard of Pap or that many Blacks headed west for Kansas. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks Mary,

It's a fascinating story and one that is getting more attention. After the Civil War,I think the emphasis tends to be on African Americans living in the South and Reconstruction. But as more documentation comes to light, we are learning more about the contributions African Americans made to the settlement of the West.
