I was wonder to what extent the interest is in Samantha Smith. I was 3 yrs younger then her and grow up in a town fairly close to mine. I would love to see her get some national recgonition that would let the childen of today know what she did for peace in the 80's. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.I can be E-Mailed at MaineNatve@AOL.COM

Wow, this is a great article. Thanks for sharing this beautiful story with us! Amazingly, I've never heard of her, and how sad it is that she did not see the end of the Cold War that worried her so much.A wonderful piece, and I'm glad that she is remembered.
Thanks again,

Meg, what a lovely article you have written! I remember long ago hearing about Samantha’s letter to President Andropov, his response, and her subsequent visit to the Soviet Union. While reading your article, I started thinking about Anne Frank. Both Samantha and her seemed to have a childlike faith that people could be good. I wasn’t aware that Samantha’s efforts for peace had continued past her letter. I also hadn’t realized that she'd died in a plane crash. How unfortunate, for we need more people like her in the world.-- posted by ahunter

In response to message posted by ahunter:Thank you Allison and Bob for visiting. Sadly, the foundation that Samantha's mother established is no longer in existence, or at least has not been very active in recent years. But Samantha's legacy continues as more children and adults learn about her. I've always wondered what would she have thought of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the world events today.

In response to message posted by mainenatve:It is so great to hear inspiring stories about kids who make a differece. We so often hear about kids who are in trouble, it's refreshing to hear about those like Samantha. I'm writing a book about ordinary kids who make an extraordinary difference in our world. If anyone knows of kids who should be included, please let me know. Thanks - ashep30@yahoo.com
