In response to I'm sure I made them posted by jerrib:

Jerri, I am much older than you, so I can say that I made pin-prick valentiles as a child in the 30's. My grandmother taught me how, but she also used a needle and an embroidery needle in addition to a pin which gave varying size pricks.

Then in one of my post graduate art for children
classes we had to make pin-prick valentines. Since there, too, I was the oldest I was able to share my grandmother's technique with the needles also. (I always seem to be the oldest wherever. LOL!)

Mary, they are absolutely lovely. Then if you reverse the technique from the inside out, instead of outside in, you have those little bitty "hanging chads" (LOL) around the prick.

Great article, and your cards are delightful. Thanks for the memories!

Virginia,

I'm anxious to make Valentines with the boys. I'm hoping that they will agree to try the pinprick Valentines. I love them. They are so different. I know they are planning on making Valentines for the parents and for Great Grandma (my Mom.) She loves the homemade ones, as I do.

The Valentines the boys give their classmates are usually store bought, which is not nearly as much fun, or are they as nice.

Wish I could see one of those Valentines you made as a child.

Wendell,

I'm very pleased to see you here at Kids' Korner. After all, it's not only for kids, but also for the young at heart.

You Mom would love a homemade Valentine. I'm going to follow your lead and, along with helping the boys make Valentines for their parents, I will make one for my Mom too. Won't our mothers be surprised?

Hallmark has beautiful cards. You must be proud to reside in their home town. smile

I hope you will drop by again. I appreciate your support.

Wendell,

I remember that you commented on Brandon's Remembrance Day article. He was delighted with all the comments. Brandon is on the autistic spectrum, but very smart. His case is very mild and his problems stem in social issues and overwhelming emotions. He is doing a great deal better than he did last year.

Hello Mary..
Brandon's article was quite good indeed, and I am glad that he was delighted from all the responses. I believe those were as genuine as his article! His effort reflects his warm thoughts of those who stand out, for those who are true heros. The article caused me to reflect upon my grandfather and his sacrifice, which I admire, and with great gratitude. For such a youngster to recognize these things, is far more than most kids of the same age, who probably do not consider such thoughts, even those who are much older. Brandon has shown a gift of such good quality. I would suspect that he has learned well from those who love him!. I suppose then that we all have our own special gifts to share with others, and it seems Brandon has found his. From what I have understood of those who are autistic, they truly are gifted. All in all, I would say, a good balance!

It is a pleasure to know that this year has been better than the last. Indeed, good things seem to come.. It is then, the patience of such trials and endurance which seems to cause our development, regardless of [what] we are, or even, what we [have]. I am often reminded of Helen Keller and her story. What she accomplish, such achievement, shows then that anyone, can do, anything! And so it seems then, it is inspiriation and encouragment which proves the most worthy effort. I believe that this is the motivating factor, that which make [us] who we are, making each individual quite special, in our unique and often times, quirky ways... When we are surround by those who care about us, and love us, then everything else seems trivial... Amazing what us 'adults' can gleen from visiting the kids cornersmile.....

Wendell,

I've often said that Kids' Korner is not only for the young, but the young at heart. That includes many of the people who write for the Suite.

Brandon indeed has his "quirks." He can't stand to wear certain fabrics, can't eat certain foods because they feel like he has sand in his mouth and he has issues with his peers. But.. he has come a long way in the last year. He's matured immensely. That is a very positive thing and I've mentioned it to him.

Kids on the autistic scale need lots of praise and encouragment. Odd that you should mention Helen Keller. I bought Brandon a book on this great lady last year. After he read it he said, "Grandma, if she could do all that, then I can do anything."

Sometimes he forgets that he can do "anything," and belittles himself. I'm quick to always step in and point out the things he is good in. He had a poem accepted last fall by Young Writer's of Canada for publication in an anthology. He is quite proud that he will be a published poet at age 9. smile He then asked me when I was first published. When I told him 40, he said,"Does that mean I'm better than you." I told him yes, it did mean that and he was happy as a big playing in a mud hole. smile

Wendell, I appreciate you taking time to surf around Kids' Korner. The kids need encouragement and you are a very positive influence. I learn a lot from both my grandsons and the kids here everyday.

Mary, good day to you!... Thanks for the nice response and conversation. I am not wanting to take away from this good article of yours, so let me know if I am.. But.. you have brought up some good things to converse about and I appreciate your sharing these things with me, and with this discussion thread...

I'm 43, so it seems we have some things in common! I do not like to wear scratchy sweaters, turtle necks or baggy socks! hehe... I usually like to eat my food cold, except for steaks!.. I can't much tolerate spicy foods, and there are many things I find annoying with certain foods as well.. Seems maybe we just never grow up! I am often told that I too have a hard time with my peers.. hehe... Seems things just never really change much!...

I bought Brandon a book on this great lady last year. After he read it he said, "Grandma, if she could do all that, then I can do anything."

wow.. that is really kewl!...

He had a poem accepted last fall by Young Writer's of Canada for publication in an anthology. He is quite proud that he will be a published poet at age 9.

Quite impressive! Are we able to read it, or find it here in this topic? I would love to read it, Mary! I was 42 when I published my first writing, here on the Suite even! Imagine a 10 year old, 30 years from now, and the articles they will be writing! Some of my friends kids, when we are talking about age, they will say something like, "well, how old are you".. and I will say, Oh.. I am 42.. They will say, "how old is that"? haha.. so funny!

My pleasure to surf here, Mary. Thank you for the encouraging words. I hope that I am able to be a positive influence. I will take more time and look around and read some of these articles. Seems like fun, and it does appear that us 'old folgies' can indeed learn a thing or two from these youngsters!..
