» Dubh_Sidhe - Truth or Error

I have never been to a more modern re-enactment, such as from the American Revolution or Civil War, but I dearly love the research and recreations of the Society of Creative Anachronism which is dedicated to pre-17th Century European history.

I particularly enjoy making costumes and preparing AND eating the food of the period. And as pertains to your article, parsley butter is one example of truth or error. In the past, parsley butter has always been a staple at the SCA feasts, but most SCA feasts no longer use parsley butter, as documentation for its use in Medieval times has not actually been found. Therefore, an authentically recreated Medieval feast no longer provides this tasty treat.

Enjoyed your article!

A lot of things like that happen at SCA feasts - I tend to always take my own butter to feasts because many stewards don't provide it.

I can cope with potatoes being served - specially if boiled or baked in jackets, but I have heard of one cook who insists that every feast she cooks has to have mashed potatoes! Now THAT is an anachronism, and one that I really object to!

We also went through a time in my group where every single damn feast we had to eat honey blood peas! Now I like them - but not constantly!

I also have never done any post 1600 re-enacting (though through involvement with the Brisbane Medieval Fayre, I am going to make myself at least 1 nice Cav gown, and possibly a 1860's gown) and in a way envy them as many of the foods we eat now are available to them to use. From 18th century onwards, there is also a lot more documentation available to them for their work.

Dubh - you would get along great with friends of mine who are SCA cooks (in fact on the Cooks list) - Mari and Mel.

I can imagine funny stories about how potatoes first became to be mashed potatoes. My imagination, you know.

Well, you have some fun sewing in front of you and I would love to see them. Perhaps you could take pictures and put them in a future article for us to enjoy.

In fact, I think a virtual reenactment would be great. I'll contribute the food! LOL!
