» ogo - Slipping through time

I too have experienced the chill and wonderment of being displaced into another time period. I am primarily a 1812 re-enactor. We were at a site that holds an annual re-enactment of the battle that occurred on this same site so many years ago. To set the stage, it had been raining lightly all day and at dusk the battle has just started. All of the American forces were in place in the open field and the cannons and muskets were volleying heavily causing a lot of smoke that seemed suspended in the air, just above the ground. All of a sudden, the Redcoats (the good guys on this side of the border)came out of the woods and through the smoke. The drums and fifes were playing loudly and the gasps that came from the audience and the other re-enactors as the British came forward to engage the enemy was simply amazing! It was an experience that I will never forget. It seemed as though past and present totally came together at that moment.

» Red - Great article...

Though I am not a re-enactor, (would love to be) I have also experienced this phenomena. It is a wonderful feeling when it happens.

There are times in everyone's life when this happens. Of course this is only my opinion but I believe it is much like what we call deja vu.

Take care Megan and thanks for the great article. I am going to check to see if there are re-enactments going on at Queenston Heights or Westfield Pioneer Village this year. I really enjoyed the Battle of Manassas that took place at the village last year. The only modern thing around was the restaurant at the gate. Otherwise, you felt and it looked like you were in the 1860's.

Good Morning Mary,

If you live in the Southern Ontario region, the re-enactment that I was describing in my message was at Stoney Creek and that event is always the first weekend in June.

Wow Beth - that does sound amazing! I don't do many wars (for me - war is a fashion statement), but I have been to a few tourneys where I also "slip" through time - especially if the organisers have taken the time to really make the area look great.

BTW: How did the recipes go?

We haven't tried the recipes yet ... Some of them I am going to try out at our first re-enactment of the season next week. My daughter's class is having their Medieval feast next month and the macaroon cookies at least will be part of that.
