» Georgene A. Bramlage - Appropriate for Traditional Season

Audrey, What a neat article! Warms the cockles of my botanical heart :+) And how appropriate for what is to some Suite members, a very traditional time of the year.

Thank you!

» biogardener - Careful

I want to give a warning about frankincense. I got very sick from it, being unable to breathe when a woman who rented our church decided to offer burnt offerings of pure essential oil of frankincense, and I had to practice the organ at the same time, namely Saturday evening.

Any essential oil is awfully concentrated and should last a person for years and years, because you only use it by the drop. The woman was rather ignorant and used the oil straight.

I have since then learned that frankincense is poisonous and should not be used on people without medical supervision. It can cause serious problems, including death.

In Bible times, it was used in open spaces. When you use it in an enclosed place like a church, it lingers and can still cause problems the following day.

Traute,

Essential oil! Oh golly!

Most liturgical celebrations that I know burn small quantities of frankinsense resin...and I've always thought that the traditional Magi gifts (myth though they might be) included resin from that tree.

Unfortunately, some people can have breathing difficulties due to frankinsense fumes even small amounts of the real & pure stuff!

There are many blends now available from liturigcal supply houses some very bad! Frankinsense that smells like roses...:+(

Oh well, Traute, having been in the choir loft many times when our kids were in choir and / or played instruments for festivities during which lots of insense was burned, and I had to help out, I sympathize with you. The loft is no place to be when insense of any kind is burned, especially if one has breathing difficulties!

Still...the thought of these exotics is romantic and exciting!

» biogardener - No problem with incense

I have never had a problem with incense, even when it is so thick that I couldn't find the altar rail. It never bothered my singing even when all other choir members were complaining. When you take one single poisonous ingredient, though, and concentrate 10 years' supply into one single burning, that is when I got sick.

The woman was only renting the basement of the church for $25 a Saturday evening, but she had a key to the church and took it over, appearing any time of the week, using the sanctuary as well, and spreading herself out in the choir loft. I let the church know that as long as they let her get away with it, I would not be showing up to play the organ on Sunday morning. Needless to say, she is no longer renting from us.

Thanks for the warning about frankincense oil. Yes, essential oils are so concentrated that many of them--even some made from otherwise edible spices--can be toxic if not properly diluted. I'll add something to that effect to the article. Thanks again!
