» SheDragon - Peonies, Violas and Sweet William

I really enjoy your articles. You put so much detail into each one that I always learn more than I expected. I'm glad I found your column here at Suite and I'm glad you didn't leave with the masses.

Anyway, I'm writing to ask if you will write about some of my favourite flowers sometime. Tulips are my favourite spring bulbs. My Mother loves her peonies, I like to watch the ants crawling all over them until the flowers open. We have a few Japanese peony trees. My Mom joined a local peony club.

My special favourites are violas and sweet williams. Not those big pansy violets, but the johnny jump ups with the smaller flowers that grow wild if left undisturbed. The sweet williams too. Each grow from their own seeds if you can keep the other gardeners from raking and weeding them out. I live in an apartment but have a patch of my Mom's garden. Most years she forgets about my biennials and they don't get a chance to start. Anyway, these two are special to me because my Grandmother was Violet and my Grandfather was William. Both of them are gone now.

I've rambled on quite a bit so I will just sit back and read your article about Chocolate now. The only thing missing is a sample of chocolate to go with it. Coffee will have to do. smile

In response to message posted by SheDragon:

Laura,
Thanks for the excellent suggestions. You can find violas mentioned in my earlier article "Viola Music: Pansies and Violets" (May 2000), and tulips in "A Tiptoe through the Tulips" (April 2001). I thought I had written a piece on dianthus varieties too, but, on checking, see that I haven't. Yikes! I don't know how I managed to overlook the "pinks," since Sweet William is one of my favorite plants too. You can be sure I will remedy that shortly. I'll try to tackle peonies in the near future too. Thanks again for the input.
Audrey
