» sharry0123 - Apples This was a very good article. Gives a lot of good historical insight on apples.I remember years ago, my great grandmother used apples for a lot of different remedies. One of her best ideas that I remember was when she would mix apple skins with sassafras and make sort of a tea out of it. Then she would use this tea and make a jelly out of it. This was great for a lot of different uses! On a cold winter morning, the spicy taste of apple and sassafras jelly on homemade toast really hit the spot. She also used this jelly for upset stomachs. For your tummy, she would burn the toast, and then put her apple and sassafras jelly on it. The burnt toast was supposed to calm the stomach, and then the jelly would sooth it. The way I remember it, this concoction worked better than most remedies they have on the market today. -- posted by sharry0123 » smaherblady - Apple of his eye Your article was great. I love to learn the history of things. My daughter (23) has gallbladder problems-so I'm going to show her your article and tell her to eat more apples. When I was a child, every fall we'd go to our Grandparent's farm and pickup windfalls(apples fallen from the trees). Then we'd go back to the summer kitchen to put themthruu the apple press to make cider. Nothing was better than filling your cup from the trickle of juice falling from the press into the pan. When I was a bit older and Grandpa had passed on, we would take Grandma for a drive along the Mississippi River to see the fall colors. We'd stop at the apple orchard near Lake City, Minnesota. There was this HUGE shed full of bushel baskets of apples. You could try any variety you'd like. Mom and Grandma could tell you the names of each variety of apples - Rome BeautyMcIntoshsh, Granny Smith, Greening, WealthyCortlandnd. They knew which ones were "pie apples" and which were better "eating apples". I can't remember the names- but my nose remembers the fragrance. That is the only way I pick a variety of apples to make pies. My children laugh at me - smelling the bags of apples in the super market - but it works! Again, thanks for your article. It brought back lots of good memories. -- posted by smaherblady
