» Renie_Burghardt - Home Remedies

Hi Steve! I like your remedy! Honey is always a good remedy, and it works great applied topically. I have a great remedy for a cough:

1 cup honey

1/4 cup water

2 tablespoons dried hyssop tops (the flowering ones)

1 teaspoon anise seed

Pour honey into saucepan, stirring in the water. Bring to a boil slowly. Skim off any scum that forms. Meanwhile, crush the aniseed and dampen the dried hyssop and stir both into the honey. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes. Uncover, let it cool a bit, then, while it's still warm enough to flow, strain into a jar with a lid. Take a tablespoonful as needed for a cough. Great tasting, and works great, too!

Raspberry leaf makes a great gargle for sore throats. Put 1 tablespoon of dried raspberry leaves in a cup. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over it. Steep for 10 minutes. Strain, add about 3 teaspoons of honey. Let it cool to room temperature. Use as a gargle. Store in refrigerator in airtight container. Discard unused portion after three days.

Anyway, a couple of my own remedies. Enjoyed yours! Take care!

Renie

» Red - Great article...

Steve,

This is a great article. I have known about the garlic and the honey as well as the lemon. Thanks for reminding me.

This article would be perfect for the Nature's Treasures Event. It fits "Nature's Healing Power," perfectly. Hope you will consider submitting it.

And I've always done it with the whiskey. In fact as a kid my mom would give it to me if I had a cold - probably not using as much of the whiskey as she would for my day ;-) It not only worked but I felt so positively grown up sitting there sipping it that I barely minded having the cold that went with it!

Renie, you're lucky - hyssop isn't hardy for me.

I remember reading something similar about wine - one reason the French, who routinely serve a glass or two with meals have a lower incidence of heart problems than most - and the wine was given credit for that. I also remember an Italian friend of mine swearing that it was medicallyproven that red wine was good for the blood - in fact hemust ahve been able to supply some creditable source for that because my mom doesn't like any of us "kins" drinking much but never objected to red wine.

Interesting! Tea has a lot of tannins and was thought to be a good restorative way back when - I suppose that's what sparked the idea that tannins in wine were beneficial. One rarely hears that alcohol is good for anything unless it is denatured. Although during Prohibition you could get alcohol by prescription. (I wonder if pharmacies had a lot of robberies back then??) Wouldn't it be funny if all these years later it was sold by prescription again for a wholly different reason??

» Patty96 - Hot Toddy...

I had a slight variation of this while living in Ireland. These were called hot toddies and/or hot whiskeys there. It also included cloves in the recipe, and used brown sugar (sometimes white), rather than honey. For a sore throat however, I'd prefer the honey.
