» Carol Wallace - Must be fate!

I just yesterday planted 30 Crocosmia 'Emberglow' in my own garden! I have never tried them before - I just happened to find a good deal on them and thought I'd try something new. The tag that came with mine suggested they might live to zone 5 if heavily mulched, but I didn't want to take a chance so I putmine in the walled garden, which offers something close to a zone 7 microclimate.

Of course they are so newly planted that thery haven't shown so much as a sprout yet - but I'll report back!

I like your microcosm in a vase idea - I hadn't had that epiphany yet but thanks to you I'll just profit from yours.;-)

» emilylevitt - great minds think alike?

You'll LOVE 'Emberglow'---but I doubt you'll get many blooms this year. Don't be put off if there isn't a big show until next summer, as these guys are well worth the minimal wait.

» Carol Wallace - This year???

Actually, I was going on the assumption that they wouldn't do anything until next year.

My biggest problem was trying to find a place to plant them. I have never used red in the garden - but I wanted these to be in a spot where we could watch hummingbrids discover them. The places that could accommodate a red flower all had clay soin and not great drainage. The ones with drainage were mostly pretty pastel gardens. I finally found a place by uprooting lots of catnip and lemon balm that I had let run away.

The cats are not happy.

» emilylevitt - Ah, yes, nepeta---

or your basic catmint----I had to get rid of all mine, because it seemed to draw all the feline bad actors in the neighborhood. Even when the fights did't wake me, I'd come out in the morning and find hunks of skin and fur all over the garden, and some beaten-up plants.

I found a piece of something that looked very much like an ear once, too...

so now I have the basic herbs, but no more catmint. I buy the hallucinogenic stuff for my sweet (but stupid) cat at the pet store.

» Carol Wallace - Catnip

I grow nepeta fassenii for me - lovely clouds of billowing grey foliage and blue flowers. But N. cataria forthe cats - I tucked it behind some tall plants so they could roll in it and I didn'thave to see the crushed debris they created. And so they leave my garden alone.

But it's a mint - and I had quite a surplus of it. The Montbretias will be an improvement.
