» Dan_Ellsworth - Skin types and SPF

Just one part of the article to comment on: Skin types and SPF: All new to me. Thank you.

In my youth, I usually got one sunburn a year, often in April - but mostly just on the arms. I'm not even sure the SPF scale had been invented yet. Those long days of sun on Type II arms - I should have had something on them. But back on the farm, I firmly believed in the right to bare arms. But I'm not sure I understood my constitution correctly. A big enough sunburn can make you quite sick.

By the way, I consider your articles organized, interesting, packed, disciplined, and balanced. Other than that, they're not too bad.

» Renie_Burghardt - Great Info!

Hi Ellen, what a neat article. I'm going to try the sunscreen recipe. And I agree with Dan, your articles are great, although he said it in more words than I. Not bad at all!

» Purpleflame - Steve, Dan & Renie,

Thank you all for the kind comments! Glad to see you all here too.
Although I love being in the sun, I know from family experience how important it is to 'cover up'; I have two aunts & a grandparent who have had skin cancer due to sun exposure.

Dan - even in a 'discussion' about something like this, you amaze me with your ability to bring your particular brand of humor to it. Thanks!

Steve - I've got your topic in my links now, and will be refering readers to your site in upcoming articles. Great site!

Renie - Thanks for tipping me to Steve's site! I read in one of your topic discussions about his topic.

» Deb_TT - Safe Tan

Ellen, I have to agree with your comment "there is no such thing as a safe tan". When I lived in Hawaii I had a dark tan most of the time since I lived on the beach. On a sailing trip over to Kaui I fell asleep on the deck (after being on night watch) and took a full day of sun. I had the worst sunburn of my life. My sailing companions were surprised that I was so sunburned since I had a good tan to begin with. It was so bad the peel came off in dark sheets of skin leaving white skin in it's place and I looked like I had a terrible disease during this shedding. To this day I still worry about the affects of that burn.

» Purpleflame - ouch

Deb,
That burn sounds like it could've been more than just a sunburn!
None of my family members ever remember having really bad burns, just years and years and years of unprotected sun exposure. The aunts were in their 60s before getting skin cancer, and the grandparent in his late 80s. No long term problems for any of them, as it was caught very early.

» gerkin1 - Steve, Dan & Renie,

In response to Steve, Dan & Renie, posted by Purpleflame:

I presume it is the sesame oil, shea butter and cocoa butter that are the sun protector, because they each have a SPF of 5 but the 3 of them together, does it make a SPF of 15?
