Diane, in response to your questions about the grasshoppers--I checked with Earl the yard guy. He suggested one of two things. Either a bran bait containing Nosema locustae or otherwise try a chlorpyrifos bases insecticide. An extension man in our state has told be more than once, if you don't do something about the grasshoppers while they are in the beginning stage where they are small that the insecticides will not help to keep the hordes of grasshoppers away when they are large.
