» dotheresearch - absorption rate of hormones increased by heat & skin irritation

I just read a news article that states that "the absorption rate of medications in skin patches is increased by heat and skin irritation. Go to this link to read the article:

http://www.yourlawyer.com/articles/read/...

Many young women using ortho evra birth control patches use tanning beds, which undoubtedly increases their skin temperature or heats their skin, which according to this news article could increase the amount of hormone absorbed. The article also states that skin irritation increases the absorption rate of medications in skin patches. I've read many postings of young women using ortho evra patches complaining about skin irritation underneath the patch. My daughter had chronic skin irritation under her patch, which turned out to be a fungal infection. That also makes sense because fungi thrive in moist dark areas that don't receive much air circulation, hence, underneath the patch. So, from what research I've done so far, there are several reasons not to use the patch:

1. It has been proven that users of the birth
control patch are exposed to 60% more
estrogen than users of birth conrtol pills.

2. Part of the reason for the increased risk of
blood clots could be the delivery system of
the drug in the patches. Birth control pills
go through the digestive system and are
broken down in the process. On the other
hand, with the patch delivery system, the
hormones are absorbed directly into the
bloodstream.

3. Now, it has been discovered that heat
increases the absorption rate of medications
in skin patches, hence the warning about
tanning beds, saunas, hot baths and showers,
hot tubs, even running a temperature. My
question is: Has the maker of Ortho Evra
known this all along and suppressed this
information, also, or did they not thoroughly
research their product before rushing it to
the market? If they knew all along that heat
increases the absorption rate, no wonder they
suppressed the information. Anyone with
common sense would see that the target group
they needed to market their product to was
young women, many of which use tanning beds,
hot tubs, etc. If that information had been
released it would have hurt their sales,
severely. If they knew this, a warning
should have been printed on the outside of
the box. Young women should have been
warned of the increased danger.

4. Now we find out that skin irritation
increases the absorption rate of the
medication in skin patches. Well, guess
what, the birth control patch, itself, causes
skin irritation in many of its users. And
that also increases the absorption rate of
the hormones in the patch. Tha maker of
ortho evra does know that it can cause skin
irritation because their drug info sheet
included in the box with the patches lists
skin irritation as a possible side effect.
The question is: Did they also know that skin
irritation increases the rate of absorption
of the hormones in the patch? If they knew
this, a warning stating this fact should have
been printed on the outside of the box or on
the drug info sheet that comes inside the box
containing the patches.

5. Over a 17 MONTH period, the FDA has logged
over 9100 adverse reactions to the patch. In
comparison, it has only logged over 1200
adverse reactions to the Ortho Tri-Cyclen
birth control pill in a 6 YEAR period. During
a 12 MONTH period, there have been 44 serious
injuries or deaths associated with the Ortho
Evra birth control patch.

KIND A GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT, DOESN'T IT? I'd advise you to do your own research. Don't take my word for it. Right now, I'm very angry because I almost lost my daughter because of some pharmaceutical giant's greed. All they were thinking about was more money. They don't care how many young women are permanently injured or die because of their product. To them, it's all about money. And apparently, the FDA isn't doing a very good job of protecting the public anymore, either. I've read several articles that stated many of the FDA researchers responsible for testing and approving new pharmaceutical drugs are hired by the pharmaceutical companies to do consusltant work for them. To me, that is a conflict of interest. It's like allowing the fox in the henhouse. No one at the FDA should have any financial dealings with drug companies or food manufacturers. The FDA is supposed to be the government watch dog over drug companies and food manufacturers, making sure that the drugs and foods they put on the market are safe. The articles also stated that many of the FDA researchers are hired by the drug companies when they leave their jobs at the FDA. That raises many questions in my mind. I don't trust the FDA's assurances about the safety of drugs anymore.

» marymo - HRT and hormonal contraception

In response to Re: ortho evra posted by dotheresearch:

Dear All,
I think everybody should be made aware of this. Especially when you consider that you go to the physician to make you feel better. People are being mis-informed about the advantages of these drugs.
The menopause only goes on for a few years and then it is over, most women who are on HRT do not know when to stop and many have developed horrible menstrual irregularities.
I have never been informed that the pill is a potent carcinogen and none of my girlfriends have either. These drugs should all contain a warning like they have on cigarette packets.

» lmknobel - The Patch and Graves Disease/Hyperthyroidism

I was recently diagnosed with Graves Disease/hyperthyroidism even though I have no other risk factor except being female of child bearing age. Through my research I cam across John Johnson's site www.ithyroid.com. His experience leads him to believe that estrogen and mineral deficiencies can lead to Graves. Since I was on the patch for a while, I'm beginning to think it may have led to my Graves.

What is interesting to note is that Graves Disease can lead to infertility. If you are having trouble getting back to normal or getting pregnant, I would get a full set of Thyroid blood tests and follow up with an endocrinologist. Even if you had tests recently, get them done again. My tests were normal last December and now they are off the charts.

Good Luck!

Lisa

» callen16 - Patch

I have been reading this site and I am shocked at what I see. I have been on the patch for 3 or 4 years now and it seemed so easy at first and I really loved it. But I just got off of it b/c my doctor canceled my prescreption, and I haven't started my period. I did have one period right after I got off, but I haven't had one since. I have read that the patch could give you migranes and I used to always get them and now that I am not on the patch I haven't had one since. I would NOT recomend this to anyone, and advise everyone to stop immediately and call your doctor. They have taken it off the market. Try the nuva ring, I have heard nothing but good things about it. Not weigh gain or anything.

» tdh123 - ortho evra patch side effects

Has anyone had side effects of the patch after stopping usage? I quit using the patch in September 2006. It is now January and I am still having strange periods, abdominal pain, frequent spotting, acne on my face(I have never had a problem with this before), and the last period I had lasted for 14 days. I have had a period every month since Sept. but they have been very unpredictable. One was 8 days early, one 2 days late. I have gained weight and feel sluggish. Anyone else experiencing after effects of this birth control? I loved it while I was on it but I decided I was ready to try to have a child and my body has not been the same since.

I too have had to have the ANA test done, just today. The results will be in within 2 days. My doctor seems to think that my health conditions are lupus related. My health started declining back on January 2004, only 2 months after starting the b/c patch. I quickly took myself off the patch but have had nothing but problems since. Since that time, I have been to doctor after doctor without any answers. For the past 2 years I have researched every condition thought of that could be related to this patch. Never would I have thought that Lupus could be a symptom. I read that higher levels of estrogen could be related to lupus and that is why more women than men have the condition. I know and have known that all my health problems were related to the b/c patch even before it was publicized (all medical records state it as well). Not one person in my family or extended family have ever been diagnosed with Lupus. If you have any advise and/or contact within the legal system (an attorney that will accept my case) please let me know. Every attorney that I have contacted states that I pretty much have to be near death before my case will be accepted. I am a 26 year old mother and need my health, but for the past few years not only have I had to suffer, but my children have as well. I am not able to hold a job due to my constantly having to be out of work which is also interfering with my medical insurance as well. Do you have any more information related to Lupas and the patch?

» MAYBELL78 - Shocked: BUT GLAD TO FIND THERE ARE OTHERS

In response to Re: Re: Re: Shocked. posted by kris333:

Hello Everyone,

First note, Thanks to all the people who posted to this site, it was the only one that I found with usefull information regarding the withdrawal symptoms from the patch. I'm definitely a victim too. I was on the patch for two years and finally stopped on Feb 2006. I had my last period during that month and that was it.It's been a year now and no period. Well I did spot for a day or two back in on Oct 06 but it was literally just a drip or two. I thought I had a break through but nothing came after that. I haven't had a period for a year now and my OBGYN finally put me on provera this month Feb 07....I hate that too!!! I've only taken my first round of doses and it makes me depressed...Uncomfortable and moody. Plus I feel like I blow up like a balloon. She's also recommending clomid but I'm scared to take that. My husband and I want to get pregnant too and it's just stressful to go through all this.

My doctor also tells me that the patch gets out of your system as soon as your off the patch..."like any other birth control pill" after reading this...I'm not so sure about it that...I'm definitley seeking a second opinion.

Good news is I'm healthy for a 28 year old and supposidly everything is working just fine (no tests done to determine that..just her words). My blood work is "normal". I don't drink, don't smoke..never have but this stupid little thing really does bite because I can look totally normal but my body doesn't feel normal anymore.

Somethings definitly changed since I've been on or off the patch and I can't explain it I just feel it. My arms and legs fall asleep on me all the time too. Sometimes I feel week, or tired, and yes light headed too. Oh and bad vision.

But all that falls under "being normal".

Have any of you tried taking prenatal vitamins...that's next on my list...can't hurt to take that right???

For those of you who've already seen a ferterlity doctor...any good news from that? What type of tests do you go through...I'm considering to see one too and I'd feel more comfortable knowing someone out there had some type of success before I spend all my fortunes on it.

When I express my symptoms or concerns...I feel like they just get dismissed or they say I'm over reacting and that I'm fine. It's just all depressing for me.

I'm just so happy to accidently find this site.
Thank you girls...and please keep posting your results...I think it's important for everyone.
