Depo-Provera: asking the FDA to investigate

Like many of you, I loved Depo Provera while I was on it. My OB/GYN at the time suggested that I discontinue taking because of my excessive weight gain (which has continued since) 165 to 223. Because of my height, my optimum weight is between 165-175. My own personal reasons for quitting DP is two near suicides (my husband stopped me both times) and the severe mood swings\depression.My long term effectsirregualrlr periods (no cycle for two months then two or three in one month as well as spotting, some flows heavy with clotting that last eight days, some light lasting only three) possible infertility, insomnia, hair loss, pregnancy symptoms, mood swings, weight gain, higcholestorolol, muscle loss, anxiety, and undesirable hair growth most recently. Recently, I have been diagnosed wethmoidmsinusitusitus, ulcerative colitis with IBS, fibroid tumfibrocysticsbreatseats, allergies, and Polycysticstic Ovarian Syndrome. My questions are: Could having PCOS exacerbate the side effects of DP? Since allergies are closely related to the endocrine system, could our bodies develop an allergy to the syntprogesteronsteron and then pass on to our own? Could all these side effects autoimmuneimmune response of some type? Since the hypothalamus controls the communications and the environment with in our bodies, could it be due to a malfunction? Could DP contribute to premature menopause or premature ovarian failure? Are there any steps that any of us should be taking to help our hormones regulate? I know that with PCOS, that a diabetics diet is the best way toweightlossightloss because to the insulin resistance. By the way ladies, did you know that fat cells produce estrogen possibly contributing to the hormone imbalance? Do many of you know anovulatoryvulatory cycle is? Basically your body is overdosing on estrogen to try and get your ovaries to ovulate. Have any of you been diagnosed with PCOS or POF? It is a good idea for all of you to pick up some books on both of these diseases or syndromes(which ever you like). Ialotlearned alot about my cycle possiblitiespossiblities were of getting pregnant. Do you know the consequences of not haEndometrialehyperplasiaal hyperpendoa or even endo. cancer. Lastly, my doctor put me on YASMIN 28 (a new BCP that has been out since 1999) to regulate my cycle because of the consequences. The only thing that I can find consumer wise was two reports of embolisms. Can anyone tell more about it besides the fact that it is a lower dosage of hormantiandrogen an antiandrogen in it. As for those of your taking iron, I have read that most of the iron supplements on the market ate synthetic and would cause side effects. There are natural sources of iron such as spinach, kelp and I can't recall the rest that are not associated with such side effects. Too much iron is associated with higher risks of cancer and heart disease when combined with high LDL. I bled constantly because of stress. The doctor gave me oral Depo. You could try asking your doctor about this solution, and possibly consider not getting anymore shots. But if I were you I'd get off it now! You might not ever get your period again after getting off the shot, and many women become sterile because of this shot! I did my research and found millions of women with the same symptoms as me after Depo..To me that's a little too coincidential. I was perfectly healthy and now I have cronic problems. You also have to remember that many drugs that are now illegal due to them being unsafe were at one time legal and considered safe.. I also think it's quite ignorant to think that this drug is actually doing something good for your reproductive system. Let's face it we're women! We're supposed to menstrate, it's part of being a women! It doesn't preserve anything, and is not going to make you more fertile. Keep in mind that i used to be one of the biggest supporters of Depo until I realised the problems I was having medically had to do with Depo. -- posted by Jesse101 » atl_grl28 - the horror of my depo experience i read your ladies responses about depo, and like most of you thought i was alone in this. Afterall all research at the time i started it (1994) it was a wonder cure. All the dr's said so i mean the birth control pill wasn't an option (at that time every woman in my family had died from cancer before age 60). So after I had my baby at 18 (thank god ) i started it. well after the first injection i bleed for 4mos straight , but didn't miss my next shot, stopped for a month then bleed for the next 6mos. luckily at the time i was in the military so i was able to see a dr often which i did (every 2 weeks) during this time i had approx. 15 cysts diagnosed (1 the size of a softball (I'm 5'2 and 90lbs) there was the weight gain and loss of about 20lbs depending on the month. mood swings often not able to move from bed just doing what had to be done for my infant and husband. when the cysts started to occur the dr's put me on more hormone therapy ( wow thanks guys) that then made things worse, finally at my 1yr check up and script of depo a new young dr said how about skipping this 1 (you'll still be good for 3 mos against preg.) so on his advice i did . then i also stopped all the other drugs , it was another 2 mos of misery and the pain my body was in is just indescribable (think 1000 dancing knives in your uterus)not to mention the really crazy mood swings. but then i saw a light at the end of the tunnel to bad by that time my marriage had ended and 10yrs later still have never needed another form of birth control. since thanks to the depo i'll never give birth again and at the age of 28 having to have a hyst. i'm sure it's also increased my cancer risks. i think the worst part to all this is the constant pain (physical and mental) that this drug and the dr's that give drugs like this to women. afterall for 10yrs i was told i was crazy and as fine as could be expected given my family history.of course this was after they had said: hostile uterus destended uterus tilted uterus non functioning ovaries pms pmdd depression and my favorite hysterical sterility and the list just goes on and on , if only 1 dr had really listen to that lil 19yr old saying this doesn't feel right. it wasn't until i was 27 and speaking with my mom that i found out it isn't supposed to feel like gravity is pulling your insides out of you at all times and the sharp burning pains aren't normal either. but unlike any of you that could have a class action suit , i was military thus i have to get permission from the us military to file against the military naming depo as a co defendant and not alot of chance of that happening. so inconclusion as far as birth control methods and our young women , i say never touch anything with hormones ( the risks and side effects aren't worth it) learn to use the male and female condoms to prevent std's and preg. and if the guys complains about the feel , leave him. these drugs can take yrs off your life and i'm not talking about when your old , i mean at the best part of life. it's said over and over again life gets better with age at 28 , 40 seems around the corner and with the grace of god and hopefully a smart and informed dr i'll be around to see it. if not then i hope my daughter learns the life lesson and thank god she has two fathers that can help relay the dangers of these hormone drugs on the female body. if this bums any of you out i'm sorry my goal here was to share my experience, not the gain of sympathy (or to sound like a drama queen). -- posted by atl_grl28 » oopsie93 - OOOOOH MYYYY.............. I had given birth to my son in March. I got the first dose of the Depo Shot in April. My period seemed to stop immediately, but in May I had an awful experience with it. I had an attack in my body that felt just like contractions and I felt as if I was having a heart attack and was about to die. There was extreeeme pain in my abdomen and back. My left arm was numb and my hair has started to thin. I am a black woman who used to have thick coarse hair. Now it is really thin. Ruining my life! My appetite has increased tremendously and I went from 195 to 202 in one week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-- posted by oopsie93 » PinkCandy - Deop-Provera "THE SHOT" I just got the shot yesterday & then nurse said "it might cause you to have a period for 3 weeks" or "It can cause spotting" But they also said that when i got on the pill & nothing ever happened. Does anyone think that just because it didn't happen when i took the pill it wont happen when i take the shot? What do you think?Thanks for reading 8) -- posted by PinkCandy » Jen89503 - Depo is just plain bad I have been reading all these postings about everyone's reaction to Depo. The more I read, the more I realize that my problems are stemming from that shot. I was really given a choice at the time I received it, the nurse practitioner said that I couldn't stay on birth control because my blood pressure was too high. It was that or nothing. I subsequently gained about 25-30 pounds. My periods have never been the same since. I had my son two years after going off the shot. Last summer I was hospitalized when I had a period for 2 months, straight, and at the end I was soaking through a pad every half hour and passing large clots. Now I am going to be going in for a trans vaginal ultrasound and a battery of blood tests because I haven't had a period since February. The doctor is talking about doing a biopsy as well.
