Depo-Provera: asking the FDA to investigate

I took the depo shot. I bled for like 6 months after taking it. I was really upset and I told my drs that something had to be done. They said that there was nothing to worry about. I gained liked 45 pounds from it. And I am only a kid. You can not be a heavy kid without people being mean to you. Well after, I was on my period for so long I stopped bleeding every month I would wait for my period to come. Nothing would happen. I would go back to my drs they would tell me that there would be nothing to be concerned about. I would have to take pills every month just to start my period. I did not like that. Well I finally got pregnant in 2000. It took me 5 yrs to get pregnant. Well I took depo again about 4 months ago because I did not think anything about it. Well I was on my period for one month non stop. I have gained more wait again, I am short of breath, I have pains all over, and there is an unbearable smell. I think the depo should be stopped. No one should have to suffer like this. I plan on having more children. I am an otherwise healthy 29 year old mother of 2, and since getting the shot have suffered from recurring diarrhea and excrutiatingly painful abdominal cramping. This occurs at least once a week, sometimes more often. I plan to discontinue its use and go back to the pill as soon as this shot ends in late July. I have also experienced some hair loss, but none of the other symptoms mentioned, no weight gain etc. The abdominal distress has affected my home and social life, my ability to care for my children (I'm a single mother), and my reliability at work. I am on several prescription stomach medications and am being sent for a colonoscopy in 3 weeks time. I am wishing I had more thoroughly researched this shot before taking it, and I am hoping that stopping it will also stop my stomach ailments. Michele -- posted by k9rott » ladydiamond30 - depro shot is posion i took my second shot on may 23,2003 and have been bleeding a couple of days before the shot,i am still bleeding this insane,i have not ben able have sex with my partner and we are suppose to move in together pretty soon,some women don't experience this problems but others do.a woman should not have to bleed this long,i just don't have a sex life,i think a group should be formed to sue whoever came up with this depro shot for mental depression,and other problems please talk to me somebody-- posted by ladydiamond30 » laceyjo - depo I just started depo in june 2003. i got on it 2 and a half weeks after my period. Will i get my period this month? I'm just wondering i'm kind of concerned. In response to message posted by k9rott:Depo is poison, and it did ruin my life, I don't know if I will ever be able to return to a normal life. there are a few lawsuits but due to my illness and trying to raise my daughter I was unable to keep track of everything. In response to message posted by emugurly84:The comparison you make to men receiving depo for chemical castration to women fails to recognize the complexity of women, the endocrine system etc. Feel fortunate that you had very little problems, but there are many women out there who have had their hormones literally scrambled from just one shot of this drug. Myself being one of them and I am also an RN. And in spite of telling the doctors of possible pulmonary embolism and incredible symptoms, no chest xray or tests were done, not even auscultation of my lungs. Yes, it is possible for people out there to be neglected and have worse medical care than that received by the public health department. On the contrary, I believe you may be more likely to be treated appropriately and caringly due to their fear of legal difficulties. Younger women seem to have less difficulty than older women possibly due to the fact they may not be as aware of the changes in their bodies or have the experience of various symptoms. Never the less, the changes still occur. The endocrine is nothing to be tampered with. It should be valued greatly. The excuse doctors give is that the older woman is considered to be entering pre-menopause early. The only problem is the symptoms are much more severe. Here is an example for you, I went to my Md with severe shortness of breath, chest band pain, and pressure, could barely walk, was ready to pass out, and the triage nurse did not listen to my lungs, listen to my heart, or take my blood pressure even after I requested her to do so as the MD instructed me to come in and have her do that. She informed me to go across the street to the store with a pharmacy in it and put my arm in one of those machines to have my blood pressure taken. I was tempted to pull the BP cuff off the wall and take it myself, but I was too weak and in incredible pain,etc. I am not a doormat nor am I abrasive and bossy, but I am able to articulate, etc. This does not assure someone they will receive the care they deserve or need. I wouldn't have believed it if it had not happened to me. I received one shot of depo, I lost over half my blood volume and was denied a unit of blood with fluids and was told that I needed to have all 3 units and even that would not replace it all and have to be admitted in the hospital for the insurance to pay for it. My well-being lost out to economics. I was also told to take Motrin 800mg to stop the bleeding early on, yet it made me bleed more. I ended up with an enlarged thyroid, adrenal dysfunction, etc. From one shot. I do not recommend women allowing the government to experiment with them and encourage others to not take these drugs even if they have passed the Federal governments study of 7 years prior to market. With many drugs it is not enough and think perhaps someone needs to investigate the research that is conducted that allowed this type of drug to be available to the public. And the FDA is fully aware of multiple problems, many of which are very serious, don't kid yourself. I decided to not even try the cream. Currently trying to restore my adrenals and thyroid which depo damaged. Nothing had changed in my life. Everything was the same except that I was sick of taking the pill and wanted to try something else.Before Depo I was outgoing, loved to be around people, was constantly busy doing things. I had two shots and became moody. After the third, and last shot, I started experiencing migraines so decided to stop using Depo. Afterwards started my downhill slide. I now have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and rosacea. I have food allergies I didn't have before and my nasal allergies, which I did before, have been compounded. Before Depo (hereafter known as B.D.) I took my daily vitamin and a birth control pill. After Depo (A.D.) I have medication to help me sleep, to get rid of migraines, to help digest food, and to help deal with the pain. I used to have perfect skin. Now I have four different lotions that I have to put on my face daily so I won't have rosacea popping up everywhere. B.D. I could clean my house, wash the car, do the laundry, paint a room and go dancing all night. My job was easy. A.D. I'm fortunate when I can work all day and come home with enough energy to eat dinner. My house is a mess, I was in the middle of redecorating and now it looks like the half-done look is permanent. I no longer feel embarrassed when people come over to my messy house - I don't have an option. Right now I could just scream!!! I would love to take some potshots at a few doctors and a few medicine factories. I have to go to the doctor but am afraid to do so because the next time I go I might just start slapping him/her. I want my life back and I want it back NOW!!!!! The only thing I did wrong was listen to some people with a ph.d and I am suffering for it. It's a bunch of bologna and I resent it verrrrry badly.
