Depo-Provera: asking the FDA to investigate

Everything was fine until my hair started to fall out. I thought that I was just getting old, and then I noticed that my friend who was only 22 also had a problem with hair loss and Depo. So I went off of it immediately. That was almost two years ago; but now for the past two years I have a hormonal imbalance and experience severe debilatating migraine headaches and nausea. This is probably because my body is naturally high in estrogen, which is why Depo caused very little side effects when I was on it. But now that my body has been producing the estrogen that Depo suppressed, I am really off balance. Eating raw foods and exercising regularly has eased the pain from the migraines, but I don't know when or if I will ever return to normal. When I decided to go off of it, I did some serious research on it and wrote a paper about it for one of my classes at the University of Chicago. It is worth reading. Depo is very dangerous and should not be given to women. It is down right unconscionable that the FDA ever approved this drug. In fact, it has been banned in Canada. This is just an update on my daughter.. I spoke with her a few nights ago on the phone.. Her unexplained depression, lack of energy for school and general poor health continues and has spilled into her new school atmosphere, resulting in poor attendance with her grades slipping to the point where the school, at my daughter's request signed her up to see a psychiatrist. Additionally, she told me she is now passing blood rectally, and sure enough, I looked this up today and it is a side effect of Depo-Provera. She is overwhelmed with stress from everything and feels absolutely isolated and alone. I have again, asked her to stop using Depo-Provera and sent her the link to this discussion. I would appreciate continuing to hear from other teens about their experiences while on Depo and perhaps it will help my daughter to know she is not the only one experiencing these feelings and health problems. I am so worried about her, as she cannot miss any more days of school or she will not graduate. She is very worried about her health as she has a doctor's appointment scheduled for Monday. I sent her the info I learned today as her symptoms are explained as side effects from Depo. While this drug may be a benefit for some, I urge any mother with a teen daughter to consider all other options available prior to letting them go on these injections. I just posted about my daughter, and I believe her depression is severe. She is seeking someone to speak with to give her anti-depressants. If you don't mind, I am going to send your entire message to my daughter via e-mail, she needs to understand that Depo is the underlying factor causing her depression and poor health.She said she would read these posts and was beginning to listen to me on this issue. Can you elaborate on why St. John's wort cannot be taken along with birth control pills? If you are currently taking them and they relieve the depression more quicky, did your doctor suggest an alternate birth control method so you can continue using it? Again, thank you for your message.. I am very happy to hear you did not opt for anti-depressants. Life is too full of beautiful things to give into depression and the drugs associated with it. In response to Me again... posted by petesdragon:You should get more information. Depo-Provera is the one drug with the longest period of "FDA non-approval", more than 30 years. That should tell you something. However, it was available in Latinamerica long before that (no wonder...). I got my first shot in Feb. 1970, the second 3 months later. I was without period for 1 year! I saw in horror when FDA approved the drug in the USA and inmediatly girls at Universities began getting shots (PSU is one of those). I read up on this before I went on it and read the most common side effects were Irregular bleeding and weight gain (my docotor said the same) but the depression also caught my eye although it was a lower side effect. Only after a month I KNOW that I am experiencing depression as well as the side effects above. I constanly feel sad, tired, want to be alone and very irritable and moody towards my family, co workers and boyfriend. I hate this feeling b/c I am a very calm, optimisitc and patient person! Is this is a temporary effect until the next shot (like the bleeding) or will it be present until it is completely out of my body? To others that have gotten of the shot, Did you go on a different type of Birth Control? If so which one and did the side effects quickly go or stay? The DP did the job, and I had no problems at all with it. In May, 2003, I was having problems with my right eye constantly watering. It persisted for months, and I finally went to the doc. I was eventually diagnosed with a meningioma, which is a benign brain tumor in the lining of my brain, immediately behind my right eye. I found the number two neurosurgeon in the country. On my very first visit, he looked at my MRI. His first statement was, "you're left handed, aren't you?" (I am..he asked this because the tumor was on the right side, a "classic location", he said). His second statement was "HOW LONG (not "if") have you been on DP?" The bottom line is that there is a commonality between DP and meningiomas. I am looking for anyone out there who took DP and was later diagnosed with this type of tumor. For all of the years I was on DP, it took care of my PMS, cramps, horrible periods, mood swings - you name it. I had 10 years of freedom from all things female-trouble related. Now that I am off the DP, I have had a huge weight gain (70 pounds), PMS, horrible periods, headaches, mood swings...you name it.
