Depo-Provera: asking the FDA to investigate

I too had gone back to my doctor and was told the bleeding etc is quite normal and will settle with the 2nd injection. After reading your email there is no way I am going back for round 2. Just wanted to share my thoughts, depression seems to be quite a common side affect of this drug regardless of the age. I am in my 40's and have never experienced mood swings/depression like I have since my 1st injection. I am not going back to have injection #2, more so after reading what other people are experiencing. The nurse at the hospital tried to get me to get the shot after I had the baby but because I read the information I said no they can't force you to get it they can only offer it to you the rest is on you. I read every thing especially when it pertains to my health. -- posted by jaysmom » laurasmommy - 2 years on shot I was on the shot since the day my daughter was born (jan. 11, 2003) I have now been off of it for a year next month. I experienced a lot of side effects the 2 years i was on it and am getting some new ones now that I am off. I had very bad depression, I was easily irritated, extreme vaginal dryness, abdominal pains (constant), i had no period, and the list goes on and on. Now that I am off I am having anywhere from 2 to 4 periods a month, extrememly heavy. I regret starting the shot 100%. I was not informed of any of the side effects when told about the shot. I was a t the hospital about an hour after giving birth and the doctor asked me if I wanted to begin birth control, I said yes, and he named the options, (pill, shot, implants) did not mention any side effects or anything. I want to have another child but am finding it very hard to conceive. I've be on a non-stop period for almost four months now. Doctors told me it would take up to six months for my body to return to normal. I stopped the shot after my October shot in 2005 (my second shot), but now I'm not only bleeding all the time, I am passing blood clots up to the size of a half cup (the measuring kind). My doctors have continually refused to do anything about it and I'm sick and tired of having to wear depends because of the flooding (even super plus tampons & overnight pads with wings can't handle the flow at times). The doctors basically told me I might have a period lasting up to nine months long--if what they told me in December is true. Anyway now maybe I can get them to do something to help me, after all they screwed me up with those awful shots. -- posted by eponadreamchaser » eponadreamchaser - my Depro nightmare after reading several posts on this website, I realize that there are other women out there having similar problems after taking depro shots. I've only had two of them but that is enough for me. My first shot was in July 2005, my second and last shot was in Oct. 2005. I didn't start having problems until after my second shot. That's when I started not just spotting, but basically having non-stop bleeding (this started about a week or so after the shot). My doctors aren't willing to take my complaints about what the depro has done to me seriously. They say "it may take up to six months after your last shot to return to normal". I not only have a constant period now, but now (as of November) I'm passing blood clots, which are getting progressively bigger as time goes on. My doctors don't want to do anything to help me and they keep on saying there is nothing wrong with me. I'm ready to file a lawsuit because this is not right. I'm only 37 and I want to have at least one more child, yet the doctors coerced me into taking the depro shots because I'm on medicaid and already have one child. Until this summer when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I am 25 years old and both of my doctors sent me to get the bone density because of the depo shot. I am now taking Boniva once a month, which isnt cheap, and since I'm only 5'0 right now am faced with the ailment of fracturing my spine and hips, which causes shrinking. I told everyone who would listen to go on the shot, before I found out it caused bone loss. There are class action suits all over the place against Pfizer. Definetly, to anyone considering the shot, be aware that somewhere down the line,if you stay on it, you will have severe bone loss. -- posted by dompal » Monheit_Law_PC - Depo Provera Class Action and Lawsuit Status (Canada and USA) There are three class actions now filed, and a fourth (BC) is being filed. The first was filed in Quebec in Sept '05. The next two in Ontario - filed in December '05. (These are all in Canada.) We are working actively with one of the firms in Canada resposible for the filings. If you want a copy of the class action complaint, please let me know and I can see if there is a way we can post this here.On the USA front, we are now readying to file our initial claims. We are also in discussions for partnering with a class action firm that will likely file a medical monitoring class action and perhaps also a class action claim for the costs of medical tests and the medications for treating the Osteoporosis. The shot stopped her cramping but it has made her unbearable to live with.
