» Ann9999 - sports headache

My daughter is 13 and soccer is her passion. Headers are not a concern for her as she rarely does this. She has started getting headaches during her games. They get so bad that she needs to sit out the last half of the game. This started a few months ago. She usually plays in the heat of the day. An hour after the game - she is OK. If this is an exertion headache - what can be done about them?

Dear Ann9999

Make sure your daughter is not dehydrated! You say that she plays soccer in the heat of the day, which would indicate that dehydration is definitely possible. As a personal trainer and former basketball coach for kids I would say that dehydration is the number one reason for headaches in sports. Exercise related headaches are not always due to exertion.

Another tip: make sure that her shirt is not too tight around her neck as this could put pressure on the blood vessels which are supplying the head.

Hope this helps
