I can't remember ever having been so moved by a piece of literature. Your review mirrored almost all of my thoughts.

I've got my highlighter in hand, and am beginning my second reading of this book. Truly awesome, and even more so, in light of last Tuesday's events. Our world will never be the same, but the human nature described here will never change.

You're in my thoughts and prayers Nichel. God be with you.

Hi Winslowlra,

Thank you so much for reading my review and exploring Zora's wonderful book. It is a classic. I am touched you are moved by her literature.

In reflection to last Tuesday's horrible events I hope the poetry of life, Zora, convey will bring peace and understanding for us to chose to keep on living, but to never forget.

Be Bless, Winslowlra.

And so it is.

I would like to say that just reading the review by Nichel as well as the excerpts has inspired me to go out and get a copy of this book. I sometimes think I am the only one who appreciates books and its good to know there are some many people interested in books.

» msaraann - wonderful review

I will read this book. I look forward to experiencing the intriguing story of the life of a woman in an ex-slave town through several relationships, and to the poetic telling of the story.

I enjoyed reading your review. Their Eyes were Watching God is definitely on my list of top 10. I'm actually doing a research paper on this novel and came across your entry through google search. Anyway I noticed that several times throughout your review, you mention that this novel is about "black" love or that Janie, as a "colored" woman has deep love for Tea Cake. Wouldn't you agree that this novel goes beyond being a racialist text in the sense that Janie represents a woman who rejects the conventional ideas of marriage and child-bearing that were, and even still are, being imposed on women? Race does enter the text, but only briefly in places like the courtroom scene, Mrs. Turner and the storm, but I definitely don't think that Hurston necessarily intended it to be racially specific. Janie is definitely a strong and empowered character that is her own agent. As far as her silence in the courtroom scene, maybe her not speaking was her voice. Silence can be a powerful tool. Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts.
