» jerrib - Wonderful story

I, too, bought my children ornaments each year before Christmas. We made a special trip to unique stores to pick them out. Then when they grew up, the ornaments went with them for their families. I now see the same tradition followed as my grandchildren grown.

Tradition is very important in families; it's what ties the generations together. Traditions may change as generations change, but I hope this one stays.

I can just see your beautiful tree.

» Lynda04 - We have the same

tradition of buying a new tree ornament each year, and what a great idea to give the children one too! When I look at some of my tatty ornaments, I have a treasure trove of memories surrounding each one, it might be of an event such as a birth, even a death, or maybe something funny which happened on the day I got it. But each one, even though faded with time, is a family heirloom, and every christmas my grand daughter asks where the white dove is, I wanted to throw it away, as it is way past it's best, but I would never be forgiven :-) Lovely article!

In response to message posted by Lynda04:

I'm reminded too of ornaments that have been given to me too, and to my son. His Sunday School teacher gave him a clothes pin reindeer every year for three years when he was a toddler and preschooler. I'll never forget Mrs. Blackman and because of those ornaments, he won't either. And my son's first ornament was given before he was even born. I was in the hospital with complications when I was pregnant with him. Another patient, an older lady, gave me a pink and white crocheted stocking ornament, for my baby. His first ornament. It was so meaningful because it kind of assured me that he truly would be born. It has hung on our tree every year since.
