Hi Mary,

I don't know how far you have gotten in your research so I hope my suggestions are not duplications of what you have already done. First of all, you might check with Mark Swarthout, Suite101's resident genealogist:

North American Genealogy
http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/10293

It seems to me that you will want to get as much information as you can about your grandfather so that you can trace him and Polly Butler. Not having any information about your Grandfather, I decided to see what I could find out about Polly.
At Genealogy.com I found her parent's names.
Wild Bill Hickok -- lists other surnames including Butler
http://www.genealogy.com/famousfolks/Hic...
with a link to Polly
http://www.genealogy.com/famousfolks/Hic...
Polly Butler

Then I went to Family search.com and clicked on
"Search for Ancestors" and searched for Polly. I typed in her husband and her parents into the search and it turned up a lot of downloadable records:

Family Search
http://www.familysearch.com/
Search for Ancestors
Polly Butler
, United States
Father: James Butler, Mother: Unis Kinsley
Spouse: William Hickok
Exact Spelling: Off

I didn't download the files, so I'm not sure what is in them. These files are Gedcoms so you will need a program to open them. I believe most genealogy programs can do that.

It might be worth your while to search your Grandfather at Familysearch, also.

As I said, not knowing what you have already done makes it difficult for me to give you advice on your next step. If what I have written here isn't helpful, you can email me with more information and I will do my best to point you in the right direction. Also, as I mentioned, Mark Swarthout is a great resource. Please let me know how it goes -- this is a very interesting search!!!

Tina
