Mary, your cat helping himself to the "cough remedy" is a riot. I would never get between a cat and catnip! LOL
I knew that onions are considered beneficial, so I wasn't totally surprised by your mother's remedy - just the catnip part. As you pointed out, a lot of the old remedies are very good remedies. Studies have shown that chicken soup really is helpful when we have a cold or the flu.
