Jennifer, I knew nothing of the background of the designer of this monument. I do know that the actual memorial moved me to tears when I saw it.It's a wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives in this war.

» Tina_Coruth - I remember...

Hi Jenn,

I well remember the controversy about Maya Ying Lin and her design. I'm so glad those in charge rose above it all. I think she is a genius and the Memorial is one of the very best ever -- so simple, so elegant, and so inspirational. It would have been the height of hypocrisy for us as a nation to have disqualified Maya Ying Lin because of her ancestry.

Great article, Jenn. Thank you!
Tina

Hi Tina,

I could not agree more. In my opinion, being that this country in considered a melting pot, this should never have been an issue to begin with. When I learn about things like this in history, it makes me scratch my head wondering what everyone was thinking . . .

Thanks for stopping by!

» VirtualWall - Vietnam Veterans Memorial

I take offense at Jennifer's insult and attack on Vietnam War veterans and the families of those who died in that war when she wrote: "Maya Ying Lin’s heritage and her choice of design were both attacked by Vietnam Veterans and families of these fallen soldiers being paid tribute. They were outraged by the fact that she was of Chinese-American decent..."

HUH? Jennifer claims to have taken a statistically significant sample and has decided to lable as *bigots* all Vietnam War veterans and loved ones of those who died in that war.

Sorry Jennifer, I disagree with your claim and I disagree with your logic. There was a **very small** number of veterans who opposed the design, and I don't know of a single loved-one of a casualty who publicly opposed the design.

Obviously, I'm a Vietnam War veteran. I have talked with hundreds of others. As founder and webmaster of www.VirtualWall.org I've had email conversations with hundreds of relatives of Vietnam War casualties. None has ever said they disliked the design. None has ever told me they disliked Maya Lin, for *any* reason.

Jennifer, please give us the statistical evidence that supports your conclusion and the logic behind calling two other groups of people "bigot".

Or apologize.

Best wishes,
Jim Schueckler

Well, this is certainly interesting. I'm relieved that this statistic that I got off a 20/20 broadcast was inaccurate because, to tell you the truth, I found it very disturbing. I'll write for a transcript of the show and send it to you, if you like. They showed interviews with about five different people from "back then" who lead groups against her efforts. I wasn't aware I was insulting Vets as a whole, I was merely mirroring the information I learned. I appologize for the people who provided it to me and for presenting it here . . .
