If you are a paranormal investigator, what do you feel is the biggest challenge you face when investigating?

Daynana,

I like this question! I have to say there are two equally as great. The first is nosey people who do not ask us what we are doing and call the police to report us trespassing! This happened. We always get permission and, if possible, try to have at least one owner or relative with us. We had permission and the owner's grandson was with us. He had lived in the house before it fell victim to a fire of unknown origin. We were in the yard talking and some of our group were in the alley. One of them called to the grandson and said he better go into the alley. When we got there, we saw a police car and, while we were talking to the officer, another one pulled his squad car up as backup! I thought it rather funny. As it turned out, the officer knew the grandson.

The other was not so amusing. Some friends and I had formed an informal paranormal group and we did some serious investigations. One of the group actually was gifted psychically, but he could not handle anyone showing greater talent or knowledge than he had. Four of us went to Long Island to see a Navajo silversmith, a friend of another of the group, who was at a gallery there. Wiley, as we called the egotistical one, had gone to the university in Southampton and decided to also give us a tour. We went to the whaling museum there, in which we experienced some paranormal phenomena. Wiley went "Oooh Oooh! Oooh!" "Feel it!" "Feel it!" He bounced here, he bounced there. Overly dramatic. It was embarrassing and we were glad we knew no one in Southampton! That was the last time we went out in public with him.

I am so glad to see that you and your group gets permission to go on the property that you investigate! We can't stress the importance of that act enough, your case in point! It is not uncommon for police to be called when paranormal investigators are in the field and it is always good to have permission in writing, or someone who is authorized to be on the property with you to provide confirmation. Nothing can ruin an investigation like an unwanted or even an unwarranted arrest! Undoubtly a challenge for investigators. Often times, I see other people discussing how they have snuck on to various properties to investigate. This is not only dangerous, but highly unprofessional! Kudos to you on acting in such a professional fashion!

Secondly, it is difficult when all members of a group don't necessarily get along well and sometimes people can become overly embarassing without really meaning to do so. It is an unfortunate situation that "Wiley" caused your group such discomfort. Melodramatics can definately create an uncomfortable atmosphere for people. Again, kudos to you and your group for handling the situation so well!

Hi Dayna,

Fortunately, as it was, we were just touring the museum and the group did not form until after that incident. Wiley was not included in the group because of his behavior and attitude, but he served as an example for the code of ethics. The behavior and attitude were not acceptable. Some of the people who did not know him found his antics hard to believe.

Regards,

Hello topazpanther!

Kudos to you and your group for demanding ethical behavior during investigations! A group that demands a certain level of professionalism is always good to see!
