When you used the word "lull" I was prompted to add my tuppence worth:

I too tend to let the real-world filing (as opposed to my computer files)bank up so that it requires Spring cleaning.

That's a bit negative though so I thought I'd share a positive.

I have got in the habit of using public holidays, when my husband often goes to play golf, to ring up surnames I am searching from the phone directory. I just phone up and say I'm extending my family tree and may I add their details. I find that a lot of people are at home just pottering on a public holiday so they have time to talk about genealogy on the phone, even if they're not particularly interested.

I have collected some good information from these cold calls.
