Much Ado About Deep Throat: Pornography and the Other Side of PaRead the article this discussion is about

» Zanzi - An excellent article! I think you hit the nail on the head...many think of pornography as "seedy" entertainment, and do not stop to think of the assault women and men suffer because of this "entertainment". They do not think of the selling and buying of bodies, the showcasing of the most private and supposedly most loving act for a few dollars, the myths these movies introduce into the psyche of men and women, etc. ...Your article touched on many of these things and more, yet I wonder what those who download pornography from the Internet by the gigabyte-load have to say... I wonder if they truly believe that porn is just another form of "entertainment" or if deep down they know its evils but choose to ignore them...? -- posted by Zanzi » pentimento - Re: An excellent article! In response to An excellent article! posted by Zanzi:Thanks for the compliment. In answer to your question, There are at least two camps on this. Some folks see viewing pornography as "evil" or "wrong" or harmful but do it anyway, sort of like a person who smokes cigarettes. That person knows logically - with their mind - that cigarettes cause cancer, but they may not understand - with their hearts - what that might mean or what that may entail. (This is a form of denial - one that we all engage in to a greater or lesser extent on a daily basis.) Other folks enter the debate and say that it isn't "evil" or "wrong." Instead, they would say that it's just expression and appreciation and that problems come with the interpretation of it being wrong. And then there is the whole debate about the difference between erotica and pornography. Erotica is something that may be sexually evocative but does not involve an imbalance of power, does not involve dominance and control, and does not involve humiliation or degradation. The problem then becomes, where does one draw the line. Anyway, these are just some additional thoughts, complications and ideas in relation to your question. In response to Re: An excellent article! posted by pentimento:Erotica, as all facets of human preferences and interests, does indeed include the elements of imbalance of power, dominance/control, and degredation at times. The difference is in the inclusion of CONSENT. Some find such elements a turn-on, verifying, valued, and even necessary, but engage in them in consensual partnerships and activities. I've heard a different theory...that erotica serves (or is intended) to "connect" people while pornography is intended to disconnect in some way.
