» Carol Wallace - I love that stone river idea

In fact I had once considered creating one that would flow into our large pond, except that my husband would have to mow over it and I had a feeling that trying to keep the stones tidy would be as much of a maintenance problem as weeding - and won't weeds grow through the stones? Or do you use landscape cloth or something to minimize that?

Hi Carol,

Yes. you're quite right -- weeds will tend to grow through the stones unless you lay down landscape cloth -- or even a "blanket" of newspapers. I tried newspapers for a new garden I helped a friend build. We laid the newspaper over the existing lawn. Worked like a charm! So, if you're covering a large area and want a more cost-effective way of suppressing the weeds than landscape cloth, try the newspaper solution.

You're right - I have started a few of my gardens using thick layers of newspaper covered by a ton of mulch - it works beautifully! Now if only I had a good source for those nice smooth stones - all we turn up in our yard are flat slabs of fieldstone in various sizes - not at all water-like!
