» katy29 - pruning clematis jackmanii

I have my clematis growing up an 5' obelisk that
has already over grown with no where else to go.
It is a little leggy in the center but new growth is tremendous. I have a 7' obelisk that I would like to switch it with? I don't want to damage it.
It is approx. 3-years old. Help.

In response to message posted by katy29:

Hi Katy,

The best thing to do is nothing until early spring. 'Jackmanii’ is a Group C Clematis, so it needs to be pruned severely in early spring before growth begins. (Cut back all its stems to a pair of strong buds six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) above the level of the soil.) Then it will be a whole lot easier to move it into a new location, or just exchange one obelisk for another without damaging the plant.
