» mica - Overwintering plants I'm trying heliotrope this year. I did try it overwintered in a garage one other time, and it was a total flop, but this year I'm lucky to have a cool greenhouse, so I'm trying it again.Of course, true annuals can't be overwintered, but so many of the plants we grow as annuals are really perennials in warmer climates. I'm also looking forward to trying fuchsias next year; I want to start training one into a tall standard, and you have to be able to overwinter them to do that. They have some at VanDusen gardens with 'trunks' about 2 inches in diameter... I wonder how old they must be. -- posted by mica » Carol Wallace - Overwintering Well, we're ducking wildly to avoid having our eyes poked out by two giant brugmansias. . .But as to the "annuals" - the only things I brought in were a special coleus and a tender pennisetum with red leaves. Both in pots in my sunroom window. Lastyear I tried something with my pelargoniums that amazed me whenit worked - I dug them up, shook the dirt from the roots and hung them upside down in a cool room in paper bags. Believe it or not, when I planted them in spring they immediately put out green leaves and started to grow! -- posted by Carol Wallace
