» judyf414 - The bugs I nicknamed armadillos

I have a bug that I comically call armadillo because it looks like the animal. It looks like it has layers of armor and even curls up into a ball to protect itself. I think they like roots like Iris tubers. I usually just work around them but this year their numbers are enormous! I live in NJ where we have rain almost everyday for the last 3 months, but I don't know if that has anything to do with this outbreak. Does anyone know what they are and have ideas for me. I don't like chemicals much. I would be happy if I could just get their numbers down to something reasonable. I don't think they are good for my garden.
Thanks, Judy

Dear Judy, Those are just sow bugs, totally harmless. We have them in the millions down here in Texas. I try really hard not to kill them while I take out the fire ants. They are really friendly little folks. I like the armadillo name. Not to worry, it's just a great year for bugs. Sand

Judy, I saw your e-mail and I know that these little sow bugs are not all that innocent. They have destroyed large batches of iris tubers and I see them at work on others. Did you ever find out a way to rid yourself of these pests? Holly
