Wild Ducks

» ellowone - They are ruining the garden Hi: I am located in south Florida by the everglades. Wild ducks have multiplied over the recent months. They are a protected species in this area. They are eating everybody plants, duck droppings are everywhere, they are going through the trash when you put it out for collection. I am not alone, I am speaking for everybody. We cannot keep a nice garden, they are killing everything.Any Advice anyone? -- posted by ellowone » CGoodloe - Re: They are ruining the garden That is horrible! Unfortunately, ducks are probably not intimidated by noisy things since they aren't intimidated by humans. You can try www.gardensalive.com and see if they have any type of repellent for water fowl. It is terrible when an animal species overruns things especially when you can't protect your property from them. It's animal rights activists that aid in doing that. I'm all for protecting animals but when they get out of hand, something has to be done. It's kind of like the deer population. There are so many that people are wrecking cars and complaining about it, but there are limits on deer killing. They should let people kill however many deer they can get for a whole year and then go back to the one a day thing. They should let hunters kill these ducks for a year or two without much limitation and then put the ban on them again.

How different my intersection with the ducks recently was, Please indulge my digression. My spouse brought me two orphaned baby ducks from the Chesapeake Bay. What a commotion and fuss these two little ducklings stirred up from the moment they arrived. I chased them and they ran, challenging me with looks over their shoulders. When I would catch up with them and hold them, they gave me quizzical looks, like "what's up, doc?" I took them to a goldfish pond, where they performed the original "Moonwalk", to the astonishment of the delighted crowd of neighbors assembled to admire the ducks' antics. Finally I took them to the Wildlife Center, where my unique, precious little pals looked EXactLY like 20 other rescued ducks which were being raised simply in a fish tank aquarium! No duck ponds for them! At the Wildlife Center, the "wildlife nazis" (my term) interrogated me as to why I had these ducks. It was all hilarious. In Maryland, the ducks fly south for the winter--to Florida, I guess! So you'll have them year-round. I wish you the best of luck -- Become a world-reknowned duck photographer, perhaps. But seriously, how about having a cat? I noticed that my ducks became immobilized and huddled when they spied my cat.-- posted by purr2go » CGoodloe - Re: Re: They are ruining the garden In response to message posted by purr2go:Sounds fun! I haven't been around ducks much myself. Humans have several types of teeth, some of which are canines (meat chewers) some are grinders (veggie chewers). So why then are there so many people against eating meat? Humans were born with the teeth to do just that! It's ridiculous. But anyways, I understand preserving the species so that we have more to eat, but preserving the species so that we can't kill them and they become a nuisance is different. Well, I hope a solution to duck problem has been found for the original poster! -- posted by CGoodloe
