» iamoz3 - how do i get rid of them

every year thousands of these tiny pests invade my garden and sometimes make it impossible to stay outside. They bite and leave welts that itch for days. I can look at a swarm of them and there must be atleast 1000 in each swarm. where do they come from and how do I get rid of them.. I live in the catskill mtns of new york. I dont have a pond near by, but do have a running brook about an acre away. I dont want to live each summer wearing bug spray. PLEASE HELP/ thanks iamoz3

Unfortunately, I haven't studied the mayfly yet. First be positive that that is the pest you have. Then, I'd call the local cooperative extension at the nearest university and find out what they can tell you. Remember, most coops condone synthetic chemical controls and most don't even mention organic controls. I'm not sure you can do anything but keep bug spray on. They are probably like the mosquito. Can't get rid of them. They spray the air here with chemicals. I really wish they wouldn't. But it's said to keep the "skeeters" at bay. I hardly think poisoning the population who will STILL get mosquito bites, spray or not, is useless.

I will add the mayfly to my list of possible future articles. Thanks.

You can't get rid of them but here is a tip that someone gave me and it works. When I go outside I dab pure vanilla (for baking) on my wrists, around my face, chin etc. The vanilla will last for about 1 hour then you will need to re-apply. Please try it, it does work and it smells nice. Good Luck Judie

I just bought some Bio-organic mosquito spray that supposedly keeps other insects away as well. It's got vanillin and wintergreen in it. Smells very very good, but I sat and watched a mosquito chow down on my leg after I had sprayed it on me. I'm sure that it keeps more away than those that bite because I was getting 10 bites in 5 minutes. This was 1 bite in a half hour. After that, I just decided to stay indoors after 6pm or not go in the shade. They don't bother me in the sunlight. My garden however, is in the shade after 6pm.sad
