» t3 - chiggers

My dad made a discovery about 20 years ago. Apparently PineSol brand cleaner kills chiggers. For the past twenty years everytime we are out in the grass, woods etc. we add a capful of pinesol to the bath water. (thats CAPFUL not CUP FULL) I haven't had a chigger since. I can't tell you that you won't eventually die from the pinesol in the water but it appears to at least take more than twenty years. Some of my most vivid childhood memories involve the application of clear fingernail polish to places that should not have clear fingernail polish applied there. I'll take my chances with the pinesol. For those with chiggers in the house mop the floors with pinesol and add some to the wash water for sheets etc. Good luck.

In response to chiggers posted by t3:

first let me say that everything i read by entomologists says that nail polish and other substances to rid yourself of chiggers is unnecessary. simply brushing them off or better yet showering should do the trick.

we have had an infestation in our house brought home from last summer. first we chucked all plants where adults might take up residence. then we washed down everything possible with boiling water. we vacuumed our mattress, carpeting, etc. and washed bedding in hot water and ran non washables like pillows through the hot dryer. we repeated this process for a long time but our cat was still getting chigger bites so we did the bedding and washed the cat at the same time, several times more. each time we had less incidence of chigger bites till finally, thank goodness, NONE.

I lived in the south for 20 yrs and never had chiggers but my grandma did. I was out in the woods and grass too but don't remember having chiggers. I had mites though, the kind that get under your skin and move up to neck level. I've lived in Fresno, Ca for 15 yrs and never had a chigger or a mite problem. Rarely have a flea problem either.

I'm at a loss as to what to say about getting rid of them if the methods I previously mentioned do not work. Perhaps putting out some diatomceous earth around the carpet and upholstery areas and then vacuuming it up an hour or two later? It sounds like you get rid of them and then get them again from outside. Maybe you need to treat indoors and outdoors both in some way. Maybe a visit to the local Coop Extension will give more ideas.

» michaellouis - CHIGGERS!

So, reading these posts were both a relief and a horror. I'm relieved that I am not crazy and they're actually other people with chigger infestations, but I'm horrified that some people haven't been able to get rid of them after years! I've tried disinfecting everything, vacuuming couches and mattresses, bombed, the works. I now want to bring in an exterminator, but someone mentioned that didn't work either. Has anyone recently gotten rid of this problem???

In response to Chiggers posted by cedler1:

chigger bits r very itchy. they r red hive like bumps and if u itch them they look like red welts on the skin. heres some info from a website i looked at: Chigger Bites::
Chiggers attach themselves to the skin, hair follicles or pores by inserting their piercing mouthparts. When chiggers attach to humans, they are not usually noticed for some time. During feeding, they inject a fluid into the skin which dissolves tissue. Chiggers feed by sucking up the liquified tissues. The human immune reaction to a bite prevents the chigger from obtaining adequate nourishment. They rarely survive long enough to complete a meal.
Itching from chigger bites is usually noticed 4-8 hours after chiggers have attached or have been accidentally removed. The fluid injection causes welts to appear which may last for two weeks ( Figure 2 ). Some people exhibit an allergic reaction to the fluid which may result in severe swelling, itching, and fever. People mistakenly believe that chiggers embed themselves in the skin or that the welts contain chiggers. Often scratching at the welt results in secondary infection.
Chiggers are easily removed from the skin by taking a hot bath or shower and lathering with soap several times. The bath will kill attached chiggers and others which are not attached. Since symptoms of contact may not appear for several hours, it is not always possible to completely prevent welts caused by chigger bites. Antiseptic should be applied to all welts which do appear. Temporary relief of itching may be achieved with nonprescription local anesthetics available at most drug stores.
try this website. it has more info and some pic but one thing to kno is that these hives,bitehttp://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/... dont always look as bad as in these.

» Jessy1684 - How to get rid of chiggers

We are new to the South and came home one night and the next morning were covered in tiny red welts everywhere. Had no idea what they were, went to the pharmysist and found out that we had chiggers. With a A LOT research on the net I have found a home remedy that is great!!! We tried the nail polish, creams, scrubbing several times in the shower, etc and none of it seemed to work and most of it wasn't safe for my 21 month old son. Then we used baby oil!!! Pretty much gone the next day and no itch!!! Scrub in the shower then dry off and then put a good layer of baby oil on. Safe for everyone and works great. To get them out of your house use Pine-Sol cleaning products and to get them out of clothes and sheets wash EVERYTHING on hot and dry them. I have one blanket that can't be washed or dried, so I had to dry clean it. That's what I have learned.
