» Barbara Bell - Re: Thouroughly Enjoyable. In response to message posted by martine3038:This is a marvelous article, Kirk. You did a great job with your series on Sissinghurst, too. I was reading your series last fall while reading Harold Nicolson's journal of the war years. He was a minor member of Churchill's cabinet while serving in Parliament. His and Vita's despair and fear of the bombing even in the remote countryside reflected their passionate obsession with the garden. Indeed, bombs (and parts of planes lost in dogfights) fell very close by. A part of Knoles was damaged. The constant tension was very damaging to Vita's well-being. Harold wrote to her from London nearly daily to help her cope, even though it was Harold who was living through the Blitz! -- posted by Barbara Bell
