» Nichel - Beautiful Hi Kirk,You did a wonderful job on this article. I love the photo of the gardens, it is very lovely. Thank you so much for the history you have provided ... that is what celebrating black history is all about, remembering the contributions even in conditions as this. Thank you again, Kirk! All the best, -- posted by Nichel » Kirk_Johnson - Re: Beautiful In response to message posted by Nichel:I was uncomfortable writing that article for Black History Month, especially since I am white and descended from slave owners, but I think that it is important to remember that a lot of what is seen as the white culture of the old south is really also black culture, albeit with a white European veneer. The gardens of Renaissance Italy were designed for an elite, but the elite didn't do the actual work. The peasants who actually created and maintained the gardens of Renaissance Italy may not have appreciated all of the classical allusions, but I expect that they saw those gardens as beautiful and that they were proud of their work. I expect that the black slaves who created and maintained the gardens of Middleton Place were also proud of their work and sensitive to the garden's beauty. To think only of their sweat and opression is almost to deny their humanity. -- posted by Kirk_Johnson » Gay_Klok - Re: Re: Beautiful In response to message posted by Kirk_Johnson:Fascinating article, Kirk By strange coincidence my latest article is about the development [in a very light manner!] of our country garden "Kibbenjelok" at Middleton Tasmania Australia! A different picture, a different soul and the only sweated labour comes from Kees and myself :=] Beautiful creations that will last forever [we hope] rising out of cruelty and arrogance that we all hope will vanish completely with wisdom -- posted by Gay_Klok

Neat article, Kirk! Nice blend of design and history. Love the striking photograph and the way it sets the tone of the article right at the beginning. -- posted by Georgene A. Bramlage
