Now that's SPACE to work with! I've lived in my current house for going on six years and it is true that the more time you live in a place before you start your garden design is very helpful. Especially where to plant the shade trees.

I've also waited for things to grow in. Because I rent I hate to spend money on things I can get for free. So, I do a lot of cuttings. I've even grown trees from cut branches. Ok, they are the Pittosporum trees (bushes_, but in California they make the best shade trees and never make a mess to clean up.
