Sissinghurst Castle - Part SixRead the article this discussion is about

» BettyPine - Beautiful gardens I enjoyed this article and I wish I knew the plants in their botanical names as you have listed. I have much to learn in gardening only getting serious about it the last couple years.I have a lot of space, empty space I've cleared and I can do a ton of different designs for them, that's the hardest part is choosing which design to go with. -- posted by BettyPine » JaneHollis - My Confession I have a terrible confession to make - I live just a few miles away from Sissinghurst, but have not yet visited the garden! For one, I have heard, seen and read *so* much about Sissinghurst that I suppose some of the mystery and anticipitation of exploration has been lost. And secondly, I am put off by the thought of all the crowds. But this series of articles had made me realise I must visit it for myself. I think if I try going on a weekday at the beginning or end of the season, then perhaps it will not be so busy. And a quick note to Betty, don't be put off by all the botanical names - it is easier to know them in the long run, as often there are many common names for one plant, but only the one Latin one. It means that people all over the world can discuss plants without confusion. An A-Z encyclopedia of garden plants is a real investment - not only will it tell you botanical and common names, but what conditions plants prefer and what care they need. -- posted by JaneHollis » Kirk_Johnson - Re: My Confession In response to message posted by JaneHollis:I have never visited Sissinghurst, but i live on the Oregon coast, so it is further away from me. I did my grand tour of Europe when I was 20 years old. That was way back in 1974 and I have never returned. I spent a week in London and then toured the continent for two months. By the time that I got back to London I was tired of traveling, so I stayed in London for five more weeks and just took little day trips. I wish that I had visited Sissinghurst, but at that time i was much more interested in England's cathedrals and choirs than in her gardens. When I read about Sissinghurst's crowds, I am a bit put off, but I have read that Sissinghurst can accomodate crowds better than many gardens of a similar size. -- posted by Kirk_Johnson
