» CarolWallace - I like your designs!

And you've given me the most persuasive argument yet for doing a formal herb garden. Trouble with mine is it is also my rose garden - and since I am using some quite huge old garden roses, I'm still having a bit of difficulty with the redesign I know I have to give it this spring. The bed is roughly a semi-circle backed by pines but 2/3 of it gets full sun, and the other third gets at least 6 good hours. I suppose a couple of the roses will have to go elsewhere.

» Kirk_Johnson - Old roses in herb gardens

It is quite appropriate to have old roses in a herb garden. As I said in my article, the concept of a herb garden is quite recent. Old roses were often grown in gardens with herbs and herbacious flowers. Just go with a Medieval concept, rather than a herb garden. All of my designs pre-date herb gardens. They were the typical gardens of the early Renaissance, when ornamental plants were grown in the formal beds along with herbs and vegetables.
