However, a white Christmas with plants does appeal to me. I will have soft white Christmas lilies in bloom this week, and I have the most gorgeous pure white penstemon in flower now. It would look divine planted around a statue, with the lush green leaves complementing the blooms.By the way Gaye, good luck with the Port Arthur Memorial. Why is it local authorities drag their heels? At least your government has responded with an attempt to tighten gun laws - no doubt New Zealand will act too, if god forbid, such a tragedy were to occur here. -- posted by LyndaH » Gay_Klok - Dragged feet It was so traumatic, Lynda, all of Tasmania went into deep mourning for weeks. At first, because some of the officials were personally involved, there was no way to hustle and bustle. Our gardens were open some little time later under the Aus Open Garden Scheme and I used the two openings to rally the other "garden open people" to offer our services and money. I received money donations from all over Australia, including a heart breaking letter from a lady in NSW who was going to open her garden with the last couple killed. They lived in a small town and their gardens joined. And they shared the gardening tasks. The friends were dragged out of their car [with another couple] and Bryant shot them and went back to the farm house. The letter made me weep once more. I tried to explain to authorities the healing qualities it would be to pay for the family members to come back to Tasmania and plant beautiful things. It is hard to explain but those who were approached by me were in shock. At first they planned a second Sissinghurst with work for garden designers for years. I got tired of writing letters and scared I was being too pushy with hurting people. And sent the money to them and that is about all I know. -- posted by Gay_Klok » LyndaH - Perhaps Kirk should write a column on designing memorial gardens Perhaps Kirk should write a column on designing memorial gardens? (Sorry if you have already done so, Kirk). I know how important a memorial can be, and how soothing and healing it can be to sit in a garden and remember.-- posted by LyndaH » Kirk_Johnson - Memorial Gardens I am a Master Gardener and I just helped a couple of Gold Beach's Master Gardeners plant a simple memorial next to the ocean in Gold Beach. It is mainly for those who are lost at sea or who have had their ashes scattered at sea. I will see what I can come up with for an article.-- posted by Kirk_Johnson » ______MarcellaGM - Mary Gardens Kirk, fasinating article. I believe I heard about Mary Gardens many years ago. I was raised in a Catholic home and in Catholic schools. Although I do not practice my religion I have always been devoted to the Virgin Mary. She seems to have helped me when I felt most in need.Gardens in many ways are places for contemplation. Why else would we plant an ornimental garden but to watch it grow or change with the seasons? When they are enclosed the feeling of contemplation is hieghtened. I have never really thought of a special planting or using plants that were symbolic of something. I do know know what and from whom I have recieved plants. These gifts or castoffs are very special to me. -- posted by ______MarcellaGM » John_Stokes - Memorial Mary Gardens Lynda - There is an illustrated article on a memorial Mary Garden in Dublin, Ireland under "Representative Mary Gardens" on the Mary's Gardens website at www.mgardens.org-- posted by John_Stokes » chrzanow - Insects Named for the Virgin Mary I'm researching an article on ladybugs and their relationship to Mary. Does anyone out there know why these charming, helpful insects were named for Mary? Is there some symbolism between these insects, Mary, and the supernatural? I'm asking this for a particular reason. In the movie Beloved, when the ghost of Beloved becomes flesh, there's an interesting birth scene. Beloved arises soaked from the river, gets on land, and falls asleep from exhaustion. When she awakes sometime later, she's encrusted with ladybugs--400,000 of them accordingn to a movie review. Please e-mail me at chrzanow@aol.com if you have any information or want to discuss this.Thanks. Winnie C. -- posted by chrzanow » Chola - Mary Gardens Hi Kirk: What an interesting Article. Please write more on similar themes and symbolisms. We are planning to have a Grotto, probably will not be able to afford an original Virgin Mary statue but will love it all the same. I have a place surrounded by ferns but it a shady spot. Now I would love to have white lilies and ireses so will have to find a sunnier one. No problem! Thanks for the ideas and "lessons". Chao. Chola-- posted by Chola » mommie_ford - Mary Gardens & www.mgardens.org I have planted a Mary Garden at our church and have used the above web site for information about flowers named for the Blessed Virgin. My problem is that I have been unable to reach this site and don't know why. I noticed the above article links to this site. I am unable to connect through this link either. Does anyone know if this site still exists?-- posted by mommie_ford » Kirk_Johnson - Re: Mary Gardens & www.mgardens.org In response to message posted by mommie_ford:Thank you for that information. I expect that the webmaster would have written to me if the website no longer exists. I hope that he is OK. I don't think that I have his email address. I don't think that he has written to me since the last time that my computer crashed. -- posted by Kirk_Johnson « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
