» MaggieM - Fungi and other stuff

Hi Howie - I really liked this article on the fungi. When I was a young teenager and we had a cottage, I collected every kind of fungi I could find and was not prevented by my parents from bringing them home in cardboard boxes to "study". I eventually had to throw them away. My folks directed me to the compost pile. My husband, Jack, of 33 years will not eat any "shroom" even from the grocery store. But they fascinate me to this day. I love the Indian Pipes best - your woods south of Lake Ontario and my woods, on the North side, have so much in common. You get more snow and live in a rural area. Not me, its a tiny city lot. But we have access to the woods and I can't wait to get out to our friends's home and 8 acres and do the "look at that" spring thing of all the different plants. Boy, am I ready! I am so tired of winter. Starting some of my seeds this weekend, then for the next two months weeks I'll be hard pressed to find space under my lights to up-pot, start later seeds....I can't wait. I have eaten giant puffball.....brought to my in-laws' house some years ago, and many times! by a friend of theirs who had a field where they gre so well. I always look low and hard when I'm walking through the woods to find these delicate, if not edible, beauts. Thanks for this article

A supermarket, one village over, has a significant collection of mushrooms, all delicious. This is where we get ours. I don't dare eat what I find growing wild.
We live next to a state park where the woods provide a nice slice of nature (and deer).
I started germinating seeds a month ago and already have a nice crop of seedlings. I made an "indoor greenhouse" many years ago to try to ignore what is happening outdoors at the so called end of winter. At this time of year I almost dispair of ever seeing the ground again. There is one small piece of ground, however, that is exposed (at least temporarily) that has uncovered some winter aconite that developed its flowers under the snow. More snow will be coming to again cover them.

Howie - I'm now thinking spring outside, it has melted some and is above freezing at last part of the day. We had sunshine...it was lovely.
I never eat wild mushrooms, and buy my "tasties" at a small local market that has lots of good choices, too. This Easter weekend I will be startng more seeds. It took me a whole day Sunday last to get my setup, set up, the trays and equipment cleaned, disinfected and ready to go, and three kinds of seeds started. It snowed the entire day, but we didn't shovel it! Now the sidewalks are clear, eaves are running and I think the buds are swelling. My brother-in-law in Muskoka (zone 4) has told me he will start his maple syrup production April 1st.....he's just a home producer but its still a big job. I know, I've helped! He's got some of his seeds started too.....I must get out to the bush here (zone 5) to see wha's coming up.

I used to disinfect my seed starting trays, then I got old and lazy. For some years now I just reuse them. I occasionally spray susceptible seedlings, such as Impatens and Coleus, with Captan. Damp off is seldom a problem when I do not spray.

Yesterday was wonderfully sunny, tonight the forecast is for more, light snow. On the south side of the house and next to it, the winter aconite is blooming, the snowdrops are about to open. Far to early to venture into the woods to see spring flowers.

» jerrib - Your photos are

sure a boon to your article (however, the scilla one does not work). I live in WA State, so am a forest lover. I have always been intrigued by all things that grow in the woods.

I, like you, was never eager to pick mushrooms we didn't know about, but the chanterelle was an easy one to get. My husband used to pick them when he was hunting deer (no longer does either). They are excellent.

The blue New Zealand fungus is fascinating!

Wouldn't you expect this? In less than one month the link I had for Scilla siberica disappeared. I have replaced the link and hope it lasts a bit longer.
Thanks for the warning.
