While generic systems are good if you're running certain kinds of campaigns, I have found in my experience that while they may do a lot of things, they seldom do anything particularly well.

Take GURPS, for instance. I would personally only use the system for two kinds of campaigns -- major time-hopping cross-over nightmares (which I've never been fond of), or modern-day/near future stuff. And even then, I minagine that I would find a system that handled certain aspects better than GURPS does.

I guess it boils down to personal style, but I would much rather develop things to fit a system I like, rather than use a system I don't that contains stuff I want to use.

You are absolutely correct Josh, while I personally love GURPS, and crossover campaigns, they are certainly not for everyone. That is why today we are much luckier than when gaming began. Then you played Chainmail, or Dungeons and Dragons, because there were no others. Today we have countless systems and styles.
