Safety re lead paint and refinishing

I would like to ask anyone for some advise on refinishing an old trunk/wood box that has been painted two or more times. I think this trunk says Shwayder Bros. 1942, imprinted under the lid. How safe is it to strip this piece? I have heard that this may have been a trunk originally used in the back of a truck before actual "trunks" were made on automobiles.
