Archie says:
one queer thing about
spring gardens is
that so many people use them to
raise spinach in
instead of food

now and then
there is a person born
who is so unlucky
that he runs into accidents
which started out to happen
to someone else

In response to message posted by Gay_Klok:
Who reading that can resist looking for a bit more?? I have to go hunt up my own copy and reread it. It's been far too long!

I've tried and tried to find other books by the author and have come up a blank.

In response to message posted by CarolWallace:
My edition is the 9th Edition, Carol, printed in august mcml and it does not mention any other books by Don Marquis - but in Marquis' intro he mentions that they first appeared in the New York Evening sun and then New York's Herald Tribune for ten years [just Archie]. He says he tried to kill them off but received so many howls of protests of readers that he continually had to resurrect them. He says that he gathered a few of Archy's communications into a book. He was astounded by the book selling 30,000 copies. For 2 years he published in Collier's eekly and the editors insisted that I do them every week. For that reason it seemed worthwhile to get out another book. So that is two

I only own Archy's life of mehitabel

neighbouhoods are forming soviets now
they are going in for bolshevism
her soviet she says

I must have both books collected into one volume, because I have read the pieces you are quoting. And in fact, thinking back, there is a huge section that is basically mehitabel - like when she goes to hollywood and returns with the platinum blond kittens and more.

I have an idea, Gay. Why don't we rename your column "Toujours Gay"!

Like I say, I have to find my copy. The trouble is, this house is practically wall to wall bookshelves and many of those are stacked two books deep. Locating things can be an all day project!

I wish I was an editor of the sort who could go to the newspaper archives and collect all the unpublished pieces and turn them into a new volume.

If I called my column "Toujours Gai" where would Dewey put me?

Yes, let's find an editor to do that!

» fido2001 - whoops

well dont blame me but
this thing was turned on
and connected to the internet
it said
whatever that is
and fido had fallen asleep
anyway
he'll never notice me here
i said to mehitabel
though she disagreed as usual

but i jumped onto the keyboard anyway
and lo and behold
the letters started to appear
on the screen

after jumping onto the wrong keys
a couple of times
i finally figured out how to use this
and accidentally
saw our names lit up in red ink
though it cant really be ink can it

this modern age keeps producing
wonder after wonder

a friendly butterfly flying north
from Florida told me that
just yesterday
and she was right
all things considered

so i kept jumping from key to key
writing this message to you all
not that i had anything to say
but mehitabel and i shouldnt go down in obscurity
you know what they say about renegade cats
and poetic cockroaches

so i somehow managed to get our names
back out of the buried section
and onto the front of the screen

thank you all for your kind words
about us and does anyone know
if a computer is really
a reincarnated typewriter
i think it is
and it uses electronic paper

and to think
i was getting used to television

au revoir and
cest la vie

archy, when I look above,
(after hitting the reply button]
it is all one straight line across
and is not nearly so poetic.

i like your line spacing to be short and sweet
maybe you could type a complaint
to the electronic management
for thinking they know better

i dont know much
about line
spacing

i just jump
from key to key

it can be
exhausting
after a while
when youre only
trying to write
something
to someone
somewhere
and you dont
even know where

and dont know
what alt means
let alone
ctrl or the one
with the flying
window on it

i try to stay away
from that one
let me tell you
gay klok
im afraid of where
it might take me

same thing with
the arrow keys
where
do you think
theyre all going
or want us
to go

well gay klok
id better go
its suppertime
and i think
fido will soon
be here

that means
there will be
some scraps
left for me
in the kitchen
if mehitabel
hasnt already
cleaned them up

we do all the work
around here and
are thinking of
starting our own
union

the aamu
we would call it
or do you think
just plain amu
would do it

thank you also
for your kind
reply i hope
one day to find out
what a systems error is

the computer has
been talking to me
all morning
but i dont know
what it wants

do you happen to have
the phone number of
a mister bill gates

id like to ask him
not to start
making
microwave machines
even though
i have a cousin
who has lived through
several of them

well toujours gay
for now klok
maybe well meet again
one day
