» Pharcyde - Psst. Wanna Buy a Planet? Laurence Winn's article on this subject (http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/1112... is both interesting and frightening to me. The United States should have no claim on the Moon or any other planet, nor should any earthly nation. The Moon should be the province of those most interested in securing its future. I don't know if the Lunar Republic concept (http://www.lunarrepublic.com) will work, but it's the best plan I've seen put out there. At least, so far it's the best idea I've seen put out there. (If someone wants to top it, go for it.) The idea of offering land claims or real property on the Moon is laughed at by a lot of people, and most think it's a scam. I think it's a great idea, and if the money goes toward financing private or commercial exploration of the Moon, then I'm opening my wallet wide. As long as it's NOT being sold by the United States government. I keep John Gundersen's comment in mind at times like this: how about if, after Lindbergh had crossed the Atlantic, we said "OK, that's been done, we don't have to do it again"? We haven't returned to the Moon in THIRTY YEARS! (Yes, I'm yelling.) Why haven't we gone back? Did we learn all there was to learn? Was our technology so advanced back in 1972 that we hit the state of the art and wouldn't be able to do it better today? Bitch about it all you want -- maybe the lunar property sellers are scamming people like me ... but what if they aren't? If the same people who complain about it (or, worse, simply dismiss it) would get involved in the Lunar Republic, running for office, making laws, creating the future of the Moon, then maybe we would get back to the Moon in the next few years. Isn't that less scary than the United States selling plots of land on Luna, or -- heaven forbid -- Wal-Mart or General Electric or some other big corporation that can see nothing but $$$$? -- posted by Pharcyde
