» not_him_again - Interesting points here, Larry. Interesting points here, Larry... and isn't it odd how little resentment to outside meddling these systems seem to be generating? The "global economy" is hardly something to celebrate, even if one thinks it is not exactly zero-sum. One thought; do you think that as nationalism declines, the migratory urge will gain impetus? -- posted by not_him_again » LarryW_4 - The Migratory Urge From where I sit, there is substantial resentment of externally imposed quality systems among employees of suppliers to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The American OEMs themselves, of course, in uniting to create QS-9000, tailored it to their own needs. European car manufacturers, likewise, suit themselves. If there seems to be little unrest due to this meddling, it is often because corporate leaders, convinced that they must conform or perish, invite dissenting individuals to step forward in the name of open dialogue, then discipline them for daring to do so. It makes for a great silence. As global commercial interests obsolete nationalism, I expect to see more immigration to industrialized areas from the severely enclosed and dying regions that diplomats call “developing”. This is bound to bring a decline in “First World” standards of living as skilled individuals from abroad invade formerly protected turf. When commerce goes fully virtual, engineers, artists, and many others will be able to work anywhere from anywhere, but most will choose to move to where the shopping is good and grinding poverty less in evidence. For those who already live in these targeted areas, I believe there is little hope of economic advancement in the future …. Unless, of course, they focus their energies on preparing a frontier of their own. -- posted by LarryW_4 » H2O - ISO 9000 and Six Sigma ISO *sounds* like a great marketing gimmick (and how many companies *don't* advertize that they are ISO certified?). But the reality is that the system does not guaranty *quality* but *consistency.* In other words, if one widget from ACME Widget works is good, all might be good; if one is bad, all might be bad. Either way, because of documentation and practice, the company can be ISO certified either way.The upstart is now Six Sigma, which is a statistical and measurement device to drive up quality. Developed by Motorola, the system is now in use by many companies, most notably General Electric. You will see little mention of ISO on GE's web page, but a great deal about Six Sigma. john -- posted by H2O
