Hi Virginia,

Well, I liked the way you wrote this article--a good mix of scholarship and interesting writing.

Gullah is a new word for me. I never got to the S.C. islands when I lived in N.C. for so many years.

Appreciate this article. Doubtless, I will visit Charlestown someday and learn more about the Gullah and (ok, cannot quite remember how to spell it).

Best wishes,
Tom

You spelled Gullah correctly, Tom. Their basketry is beyond belief--gorgeous but terribly expensive and, of course, their cooking is delicious--beyond words. Just don't get caught in a spell...

Thanks for an interesting article about the customs and beliefs of the Gullah. I do love their beautiful dashikis.

...and, During WWII, Gullah servicemen confused the Japanese with their language and accent and provided an important means of code for the U.S. during the war in the Pacific Theatre. We owe them considerable gratitude and thanks.

Thanks for introducing these folks, Leigh. I didn't know they were also involved in code during war. And you mentioned beautiful baskets, now that caught my eye! Sounds like some Native American traits.

How are you, Jerri? Well, yes, some traits are similar and I am a true believer in pre-history cultural transmissions. Do you collect baskets?
